Push pins

Simple question from a real rookie...how do remove a push pin? Simply pull or pry with a flathead screw driver. I'm attempting to install NBVs.

Pry up the center spade with a flat head screw driver, Then the pin will lift out. :thumbup:

If you look at the head of the push rivet, you'll see a slot in the side, a flat bladed screwdriver in the slot will lift the center section, then you can pop out the outer section.

Oh, I'm not concerned that you are a rookie. Everybody started somewhere. What fascinates me is that nobody ever asked before this week.

Those push pins gave me trouble a few weeks a go fitting the NBV highway brackets...actually asked the question here and got a heap of replies.....i found that one screwdriver push the pin skew so used two to pull the pin back far enough to get hold of by hand. Works a charm, then the outer part sit loose and easy to get out. Everyone warned against losing them on the floor....keep them together in a container they have the tendency to go walk about!

Just check on the rubber grommet in the body work, especially the one closest to your knee when you refit the cover...make sure the pin goes in straight and not catch the side of the grommet. Mine did and the grommet tore and now the panel is loose. Looking for replacement grommets but a bit if a mission.

I installed my Triple-Play in Scotty's (NancysToy) driveway in 2009 with help from Firefly, who I had met a few weeks before at the Gilmore Motorcycle event...of which Scotty was the master judge (or something like that).

When you are using the screw driver, use your fingers of the other hand to protect against the blade slipping. I've removed these push pins countless times; but, the other week the blade slipped and I scratched the tupperware. You can't see the scratch b/c it was on the 'Y' panel part that is under the seat on my GS.

The first time i ran into push pins after 40 years of playing with bikes was a few years ago changing oil on a 929, I felt like a rank novice, I had to go down to a Honda dealer and buy an extra pack of pins to replace the broken ones.pps:

Go to hardware store, purchase simple tack puller, it’s best thing I’ve founf, D-Daddy

You can buy one or make one. Have several sizes in an auto panel tool kit. Common screwdriver works too.

When I went to Harbor Freight several years ago looking for push pin pliers I was disgusted at the entire inventory of my local store; there wasn't a single pair that had smoothly finished, even meeting jaws, so I ordered a pair of Lisle pliers from a local auto parts store. In my tool boxes, a sh**ty tool is worse than no tool at all.
