I checked the air box and it had oil on it. So I pulled the tupperware and pulled the top off the air box. There was oil inside allright. My question is how does one stop this from happening again? What causes this? I never had this problem until I put on a K&N filter. I am not saying this caused the problem.:helpsmilie: Should I put the stock air filter back on? I took the top off the air box very gently and put it back on the way it came off without missing and clmps that hold the air box on. Any help would be appreciated.
I won't be riding for a while anyway because I have to have my left knee replaced on Friday for the second time:gaah:. The first time was five years ago.

It has nothing to do with the air filter.
I had oil blow-by almost two years ago, I just put a piece of foam [1/2 inch] in the crankcase breather hose that that gos to the top left side of the air box,
That ''un'' Rube Goldberg move fixed the problem.

I hear that their so good at those knee replacements they'll do them while you Waite.

Oil in the airbox is a common problem. Your K&N is not at fault. An oiled filter like the K&N or Green Filter will do better, infact, maintaining its performance when it get oily, as opposed to the decrease in flow from a dry (stock) filter when it becomes oil soaked.

I like the air filter foam in the breather hose trick, but some have installed oil catch cans. A search will show you several variations. Not overfilling the oil is a big help. Be sure to check the level properly, at full operating temperature, like after a ride. Just starting the Spyder and bringing the temp gauge to 3-4 bars will not do it. The oil and metal take longer to reach full temperature. Be sure to screw in the dipstick. This procedure is different from most motorcycles. Not checking the oil properly usually results in overfilling. I also recommend not keeping the oil clear to the full mark. About half way seems to keep the oil in the airbox down.

This is not really a big deal (at least to a guy who also rides old Brit bikes), but it does make a mess and can cause worrying smoke. I check the box and thoroughly clean out any oil at each oil change. A thorogh cleaning should last you a while.

This is what the tech at My local dealer told me. He said " Leave the oil hose in the box!! Do NOT reduce its flow in ANY WAY!! He said this comes strait from BRP they told him it is supposed to breath that oil to reduce the crank pressure" So there you are :dontknow: When I pulled mine apart I FREAKED at how much it blew. Thats why I called the dealer Immid.

:agree: It is not the K&N. It may be that you're just riding it harder after the K&N install but it still has nothing to do with the filter.

As mentioned above, there are several viable mods, all inexpensive and some easier than others to install and maintain.

Pick one that looks good to you and go for it. Once done you can forget about oil in the air box.
