PTT switch installation on an RT

I've recently installed PMR's (radios) on my GoldWing and on Joanna's Spyder so we can communicate when out on rides here in the UK.


My research indicates that many people have tried to make use of the Press-To-Talk button which Can-Am kindly provides on the RT, but all have given up due to it being on the CANBUS. I too was desperate to use it, but when I dismantled the left hand multifunction switch clamshell I found that the leads coming from the PTT switch are on a flexible printed circuit board and are extremely thin - so I too chickened out.


However, I didn't want to use a switch inside a box stuck to the shell, as others have done, so I managed to install an extra momentary contact switch in a hole drilled (carefully!) in the clamshell. I then ran the wires from it down the inside of the handlebar shroud.


I thought it might interest others, so I have attached some photos.

Good install, Big Mac. I have thought of using the PTT switch, too. This is a good alternative.

Hmmmm, good idea for a "cruse cancel" button instead of stepping on the brake pedal.

Yeah, Bogie. Where is the wire to connect the switch in?

You would need to tie the button in parallel to the brake light switch. A momentary press would cancel the cruse control.

I just removed the 4 screws holding on the left lower handlebar cover and followed the other wires going down there, poking my twisted pair down beside the handlebar pivot point. To save having to remove lots of tupperware, I simply pulled off the left front speaker cover and my wife's tiny hands were able to get to the wire and plug in its connector to the lead heading to my radio.

Easy - from my little box marked "misc miniature switches"!

I'm afraid I have no idea where I got it originally. It was the only one I had which was short enough to fit in that space though - I had loads of others which were double the length and would not have fit.

However, a quick Google search for "miniature push switch momentary" found these which look virtually identical to mine:

If you go to the auto parts stores they sell the LED light strips that have a push buttons on the package to test the lights.
I used one of those button for my trunk light.

I understand, I used to have such a parts bin, but when we made our recent move I cleaned out all my parts "that I thought I wouldn't need". I'm sure I had one of these in there. :sour: Thanks for the links.
