PROPANE STICKER SHOCK

Just got my propane bill yesterday. Price per gallon went from $2.19 to $2.79 in 43 days. Yep $.60 a gal.. Feel sorry for a lot of folks around here, & myself of course.

I had an oil furnace up north and saw it go up double in one year so be happy. It was a cold winter for me after I turned down the stat.

The shortages caused by the recent storms, plus the high demand from the severe cold supposedly made propane spike just like gas prices. As long as the market can be manipulated by speculators, that will continue. It is more than supply and demand these days, it is a bunch of investors gambling on what might happen, and their threats of shortages or expected demand that drive the market now. It is pure insanity, a strain on the economy, and a nightmare for consumers.

Now may be the best time to invest in Natural gas.

Invest in it as in buy stock, or switch over & use natural Gas? No supply line where I live. If there was the price of natural gas would probably triple the minute I switched over. Then everybody using it would be after me.

Wow..!!

thats abuse..!! Sorry you all are suffering those spikes. Can understand the gas situation we have lived that since forever but home heating especially in the winter is abuse and greed...:gaah:i

Sorry to hear that. I rented a trailer (never AGAIN) and it was on propane. The company (only one that delivered in the area) were impossible to deal with. And I will NEVER deal with them again - no matter what propane company. I would rather have to go to a gas station and buy kerosene in 5 gallon increments then deal with the likes of any propane delivery companies - heard too many horror stories from others that dealt with different propane companies. It was always the same story - the propane company was screwing me. :lecturef_smilie:

Poor Baby

I just filled my 500 gal tank at the lowest price available $ 3.56 per gal:yikes:

Wife works for oil propane company. She does bulk delivery for oil. The state and feds have removed working hour restrictions on CDL drivers. She has been working 12 plus hours per day. Propane drivers are working harder due to shortage. Two of their tank farms are empty so they have to travel further to load. At least the demand is slowing down due to warmer weather. They may get a chance to catch up.

I used fuel oil in MN and propane in WI. I can surely feel the crunch you folks get when the bills come due. I too, am appalled by the fact that the speculators come in and drive the prices. It has been a while since we have mentioned this subject--but it is still out there.

RE: Natural gas. I agree, it seems to be the best way to go at the moment. My heating bill for December was $135.00. We did have some below zero, but also had some 30 degree stuff--so it kind of balanced out. In summer, my gas bill goes to less than $10 a month.

Energy comparison chart.

Here is a spreadsheet I created a couple years ago comparing heating costs by fuel. The prices are about a month old for my area southwestern Ontario Canada.

Nice workup, Billy! That is why we went with the ground source heat pump (commonly called geothermal somewhat erroneously). No natural gas available for us, and the cost of extending it to us was over $50,000, not counting the cost of piping it in from the street. Unfortunately, the boring equipment broke down and the weather brought that part of the project to a halt. We are going to need to install a temporary propane furnace to finish the project. The cost of bringing in a tank and the initial fill has gone up some 50% since Fall...if we can even get anyone to provide one now. We need the tank anyway, for the stove, fireplace, and generator, but things got tightenened severely and the costs skyrocketed due to the "weather". Winter happens every year, and these "shortages" follow suit. It is pretty much a game...and the consumers are the losers.

We also use a ground source heat pump and use natural gas for stove, tankless water heater, etc. but power bill is still high, but could be worse on other fuels.
