• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Plastic Boxes

I am a confessed Toolaholic.
My Toolaholism goes back decades.
Tools that use electric power are particularly irresistible to me.
Back in the day that used to mean tools that plugged in.
Now, of course with the advent of Lithium-Ion technology that just means you need a few charging stations.
So, if you are cramped for space as I am, tools now take up twice the usable room.
One space for the tool another for the charger.

Which brings me to the cases that tools now come in.
Nice sturdy well made plastic boxes usually with the manufacturer's name
emblazoned in some form of 3D moulded plastic.

I thought these boxes were really cool.
In fact I have chosen to purchase more than one tool over another simply because of the case.

Today though I have suddenly become aware of a problem.

I used to bring home a tool and stick it in a drawer or cabinet of like or nearly like things.
Woodworking stuff in one section, mechanical stuff in another, and really specialized stuff somewhere else.

That was then.

Getting older of course has loads of advantages and benefits which I needn't list here.
Short term memory allocation isn't one though.

Today I waddled down to the shop in need of a particular tool for a particular purpose.
Instead of going to the cabinet like the old days and plucking it out, I had to start looking on my tool shelves.
I saw stacks of nice bright colored uniform plastic boxes, all the same, all containing tools.
Lots of nice pretty cases.
Different colors for different manufactures.
Was what I was looking for Milwaukee, Bosch, DeWalt, Black & Decker or something else?

I didn't remember.

So, I had to go though every stack, opening each until I found what I was looking for.
Which by the time I had finished looking through the stacks of boxes I couldn't remember.
You know, that memory allocation thing in action.

Oh well, at least I found a biscuit joiner I had forgotten that I had.
Too bad I didn't need to join anything with biscuits.

Don't eat those biscuits with gravy.

 GREAT story!!
But it reminds me of my own personal shortcomings....
I'm now allowed to use only two tools:
WD-40, or Duct Tape...
I use one of them for when something moves; but shouldn't
and the other, when something doesn't move; but should!
But now I forget which is which! :banghead:

Been here now going on six years. All my fix it stuff is in plastic boxes and I still pretty much have to open each and every drawer to find the elusive "thingy" that I need.:bowdown:

Filing ....

The filing system of the mind....as explained by a wise old doctor back home in Peru your memory is like an old desk with many drawers. As you get new ones you file them away in those drawers. Now when you have filled all the drawers you have to place the new ones on top of the desk. The desk is cleaned regularly sweeping away those new memories but you do remember all the ones you filed away. After my grandfather heard this explanation he never worried about forgetting anything....

I was in the basement looking for a tool this week - and gave up.

My son's wife passed away in December and we told him to move home so he could get out of the apartment they shared - it was too difficult for him, both financially, and emotionally, to stay there.

Everything from the apartment is now in my basement - couches, chairs, tables, boxes and boxes that appear to be breeding and making more boxes!! - and I can't find anything of mine. I think it is all on the bottom! :gaah:

Thank goodness the tools I use on my Spyder are all in the garage!

If anything in the house breaks, it isn't getting fixed, for the time being! nojoke

Labels can fall off plastic boxes, I use a paint pen and mark all four sides AND the top. All I need to remember is where I put the paint pen.nojoke

Paint pen¿ why not engrave? Plastics branding last longer. Wanna get fancy get some plastic cement (for model cars) & chrome lettering from craft store. & or if you are good with a exacto blade go decal crazy what ever fits your OCD tooling system. (Makes for memory free finding)
