Plasti-Dip of Windshield Bracket

Greetings from Texas .... I've searched and searched, have found several references to plasti-dip, but none specific to the windshield bracket. I THINK I remember Dave (aka CyncySpyder) doing his in red to match Ted's Red Sled ... but can only find pics of the stuff he did in black. My reasoning is that I have the "Legion Riders" banner etched into my windshield and the gray casting does too good a job hiding it. So, I'd like to "turn it black" ... and am looking for some info on success or failure of such an endeavor using plasti-dip.

So .... any pointers or how to info out there? The bracket itself looks pretty easy to remove, just curious about how to support for "dip" and any other info that you can think of.

I did it on mine... It works ok, but when you mount the bracket back in the motorized arms, it will strip away the "paint/plastic" so be vary careful.

I went instead and got a bracket that Cruzr Joe had power coated, swapped mine and got it power coated and sent it back to Joe. Looks a lot cleaner!

However, I did Plasti-Dipped motorized windshield arms too and it does the trick. I also Plasti-Dipped the Can-Am chrome logos on the service panels and the Fender covers (2013 model) and it looks good.

Although at spyderfest I saw some hydrographics and spray painted bikes and think I may do that in the long run. The only problem with the plasti dip is that it is a rubber type of material when it dries and seems to collect dust and other particles from the road. It will wipe off easily but think powdercoated for the windshield bracket is the best bet for a permanent solution.

We had my wife's bracket powder coated and just spray painted the bracket arms with a few coats. It all looks much better in black.

That being said, it's my understanding that Plasti-Dip will peal right off with little effort; which to me, makes it a nice option because if you get tired of the 'blacked-out' look, you can easily remove it all in a few minutes and go back to the original look. Also, you could spray this on the front to work as a front end protector from rock chips, and peal it off once it starts to looking a little dingy. The stuff is very cheap when you consider what you get for it.

...I have a couple of cans sitting in my garage. I am waiting for some free time to experiment on my RT-S as well :thumbup:

I haven't dipped the chrome on the saddle bags or the truck because I have LED's glued on it and I would have to do a little more effort (and down good riding time while the dipping dries). But I will get around to it eventually.

I really want to do this...a flat black windshield bracket for my black 2014 RT-SE

doesn't have to be plasti dip...maybe I should consider powercoat or maybe home canned spray paint will do

Any suggestions ?

Plastic Coat

Ann, I sprayed the silver windshield bracket on my '14 shortly after getting it in Jan '14 with the Plastic stuff and its still holding up nicely. I also used the Plastic paint to coat the front "nose" section between the radiators and it too has held up with no peeling or chips from rocks. Read and follow the instructions carefully, hang the bracket up so you can paint both sides. If you dont like it, as mentioned above, it peels off easily. You might want to lay out a piece of cardboard and try a couple of sprays to see how it covers and to get the feel for it. Really quite easy, and fun to do. I got mine at Lowes paint department.

PS: It comes in a spray can, even tho its called a "DIP".

I believe the Dip in the Plasti Dip name is from the other product to coat tool handles and things like that. With that product you actually dip the item then allow it to drain and harden.

Plasti Dip spray is cool stuff. Not so cool I would paint an entire car with it like some people do (there are professional shops that spray entire cars), but cool for some items.

Consider also that the oem part if painted with spray paint rather than Plasti Dip could probably have the low cost spray paint easily removed with a solvent and not damage the original finish.

Powdercoating to the color of choice is no doubt a more permanent and higher end result and would require powdercoating again to return to the original color.

Personally, I bought a simple can of Krylon to paint ours. When I install the new windscreen support I got from Reboot I will refinish the those detail parts also that accomplish the lifting motion.

While I haven't done it (yet), I have in the past had really good results with the wrinkle finish spray paints. They seem to be pretty tough and long lasting. :thumbup:

The easiest and longest lasting is to have it powder coated in "Satin Black", local powder coater will charge about $50.00.

I have done about a dozen of these and highly recommend it, be sure to put some 1 inch long screws in the threaded holes (about 1/4 ' into the threads) so that the powder coating does not mess up the threads, and tell the powder coater to plug the three holes (X2) that the aluminum cylinders go into (or you will have to clean them out and they are not as easy to clean out as they look).

Normal powder coating time is 4-6 days from a powder coater, so do this when no rides are planned.

Pay attention to the underlined areas.

Although I've never used the Plasti-Dip product, I just don't think it's the right product for this application.

I have powder coated virtually all of the OEM gray castings on my 2012 RT-S. And I've also used Rust-oleum's aerosol Truck Bed Coating, #248914. It's cheaper than PC, do it yourself spray can from auto parts stores, and its a tough and textured satin black finish.

In my opinion you would be better off to have your windshield mount powder coated.
I originally plasti-dipped my bracket and though it did look better than the grey it was a little cheap looking and the stuff does wear off.
Removed the plasti-dip and had it powder coated and it looks excellent and no worries of it wearing off.

Find yourself a powder coater! Is not that expensive and it holds better than anything else in the market!
I got mine done here in chi- town for about 35 or 40 bucks! Went with glossy black! Ceramic powder coating oon the muffler pipe and glossy black on the pipe heat shield!
