• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. PICKING SPYDER LOVERS BRAIN UNTIL DRY

I AM PLANNING ON AN EXTENDED TRIP. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A TRAILER. ONE FORUM SAID DO NOT MESS WITH THE ELECTRICAL ON A SPYDER.

ARE THERE ANY CONCERNS I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WIRING UP THE LIGHTS?
AM I IN FOR ANY SURPRISES PULLING A TRAILER. I HAVE PULLED TRAILERS BEHIND VEHICLES ALL SIZES AND SHAPES.

WHAT KIND OF MAXIMUM WEIGHT SHOULD I CONSIDER.

The Spyder does a wonderful job pulling a trailer - better than any other bike on the road, INMO..

Instructions with the BRP harness show how to wire the harness - just takes time, not particularly difficult, and there are a number of threads on the forum, if you need to modify the trailer lights for the BRP wiring...

You'll get better results if you DON'T TYPE IN CAPS. Typing in ALL CAPS is considered YELLING.....

The Spyder pulls a trailer well. How you wire it depends on the model of Spyder and the particular trailer. There are things you can do, and things you cannot. We'll need more specifics before we can advise you further.

YELLING?? WHO'S YELLING?? :gaah: :roflblack: That is true, though, in forum speak...

kmakona, the guys and gals here will point you in the right direction for sure. Scotty is right, though. More specifics on what model Spyder, what trailer etc. is important in order to provide accurate information. Once that is provided, they will get you there!

I didn't know i was yelling sorry. The Spyder is 2008 GS. I'm afraid to type now.

Please, don't be afraid (said the Lion to the Gazzelle... just kidding!:roflblack:) This is a fun loving group that razz each other quite a bit! :D You have questions, the guys and gals have answers, so fire away!

Should be easy then. For a 4-wire trailer, just wire in a 5-to-4 (3-to-2)converter. That should have an attached pigtail, which you will have to run outside the rear fender under-panel. It's that easy...as long as the trailer doesn't have LED lights. That can complicate use with a converter. If you want to get fancy, you can use a powered (isolated) converter. For a 5-wire trailer you should use an isolator, IMO. If all else fails, Bushtec can provide a converter, but most trailer shops can help.

Direct wire

So I was told I had to have something which would not cause problems with the electronics. I can just direct connect to the appropriate wire. ie: spyder turn signal light to trailer turn signal light?

If you check the general discussion thread that reads Canadian trailer hitch there is a thread to a harness that converts a 5 wire to a four and isolates the trailer harness from the rest of the bike.

I would not recommend a direct connection. Using a converter prevents problems. In addition, you cannot directly connect a 5-wire sytstem (Spyder) to a 4-wire system (many trailers), so a converter is essential there. You could direct connect a 5-wire system to a 5-wire trailer, but you could awaken Miss Nanny. Better to be safe than sorry, IMO.

GS/RS Trailer Hitch and Trailer Wiring

I'm towing a Bushtec using BRP hitch and an Electrical Connection Trailer Isolator Relay with universal subharness. I use 6 pin connector with the 6th pin 12V non switched fused for Bushtec interior light..
I've used the Electrical Connection Trailer Isolator Relay units for many years on Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki motorcycles. Have had no electrical problems or failures of the M/C computer systems.Have always used 5 pin trailer connectors with no converters.
Very straight forward installation on a GS/RS. All the wires you need are under the tail cover. Remove the left rear panel and the tail cover and the 4 wires you need are there.LT, RT, Running, and Brake wire.....

Those look pretty good. Smaller than a converter, and no pre-wired pigtail, for those that wish to wire their own connector. A little more expensive, but a good alternative. There are many ways to skin this cat, but best ways isolate the trailer, as I said previously.
