Parking brake

I had the recall done on my parking brake last summer. I dont really use it that much and it works good. I mean I dont have problems with the pedal like before the recall. but now the pads seem like they stick to the disc. Iam not sure If that is the case though. you can get it to release by just turning the caliper by hand. I kinda think that the cable is sticking in the sheath. has anyone eles had this happen?

Just to answer some questions I park the spyder inside and I dont park it with the brake set. I push it out side and start it to warm it up and set the brake then in the paved driveway. when I go to leave that is when I have found that the brake is sticking.

Thanks for the help.

I'd have the dealer readjust your PB. Sounds like they fubared the PB install or missed fine tuning it.

mine stuck before recall burned out pads and caliper both were replaced under by dealer no charge :coffee:

Are we talking here about the release mechanism in the foot lever sticking or something else in the PB system?

The only problems I've had is getting the set/release mechanism to work in the release function. Once I do get it to release I don't have any problem with the caliper hanging up.

Parking Brake

Visited the dealer last Friday talked about the PB. The mechanic said there was no recall and he has found the problem to be based on pushing down on the PB lever to hard when setting it. :hun: I told him you can push it just enough to set it and you still end up having to drive it all the way down for it to release with multiple tries. I also told him how stupid you feel standing in public jumping on a brake to release it. He said they will fix it for free but it's just an adjustment. He said just release to PB brake and adjust cable to tighten as the new cable will stretch.

Does anyone have an official recall notice from BRP? :dontknow:

You know it's just too bad dealers feel the need to pull something out of their hat (or other source) instead of getting it right. Everyone should be on the same page with this kind of thing but it never seems to happen.

As far as I can tell there is no official 'Recall' on the PB problem. Instead, there is a 'Service Bulletin'. I beleive this service bulletin covers a VIN# spread which makes sence because at some point I'm sure the factory replaced the offending part with the new, improved part. VIN#'s beyond that factory install change would not need or qualify for the fix.

So, if your Spyder falls within the VIN# spread and you take it to the dealer and complain about the PB hanging up BRP will pay to have the new part installed under warranty.

The difference between a 'Recall' and a 'Service Bulletin' is that a Recall applies to all affected vehicles and you would be notified to bring your Spyder in for a fix whether you are experiencing a problem or not (as in the Brake Reservoir Cap fix).

A 'Service Bulletin' is different in that you have to take your Spyder in and complain about it to get it fixed. There will be no notification.

The idea being if it ain't broke (giving you a problem) and it isn't considered a safety issue then it gets a safety bulletin and not a recall.

i dont have PB sticking problem but PB does not engage here and there.
i have to release than reset for it to work
i asked my dealer and seems my spyder already has new springs and they were like "i gave up on that one"
i will have to ask them to do something on 6k service
i hate having to double check every time i park or sometime i dont double check and get a surprise when i push on handle bar to lock it.

If your parking brake was working good and then became progressively worse, you probably need to adjust the cable. As the rear brakes wear, one click on the parking brake won't engage them enough to hold the Spyder. Eventually it will take two clicks, then three, then four, etc. as the rear pads wear. There is a certain level of adjustment at the cable end near the rear pads and when you reach then end of that, I think you take the cable loose at the parking brake pedal and make an adjustment at that end. I don't know for sure if or how you adjust the cable at the parking brake pedal end because I never got to that point. I got so used to not using the parking brake because of the sticking issue, I never use it anymore.

Actually, when you run out of cable adjustment, you need to remove the lever, and rotate it one more notch. Also, look at the boot to be sure it isn't getting pulled into the cable sheath. This has happened on some where there wasn't enough cable freeplay, and has caused the brake not to engage fully. A little cable lube here doesn't hurt, either. Lubing the pedal mechanism periodically is also very useful in preventing sticking.

Where the PB Lever is Located

is a real issue----I believe that because of its location (back, down , under) many of the PB errors in setting it or releasing it occur. So I took the matter in my own hands and added a "Z" shaped extension (up, out and easy to get to) out of a 1 1/2 " by 1/4" steel strap from Home Depot---took some heating and frabricating, but it works great every time---I wonder why they put it in that location??

Do you have a picture or two of your bracket sara? :nopic:

I have had the same problem once and a while, just talked to service guy yesterday he didn't seem too excited about calling it warranty... "Get Up" :bdh:

If your Spyder is within the VIN# spread it doesn't matter what the dealer wants to call it, it is a recall (according to BRP) and since they made the vehicle and are paying for the repair the dealer should be happy to fix it.

Maybe you need to find a horse with a pulse?

I can tell you the dealer would think differently if he was riding a Spyder everyday with a PB issue.

Just this past summer when bjt and I took our spyder in for routine maintenance our dealer is the one who told us about fixing the parking brake. While he was at it, he corrected our brake squeal per BRP's instructions. We now both have working parking brakes (hardly use mine anyway) and non-squealing brakes. I think these two things were repaired at our 6000 mile check up, I am not 100% sure though. Anyway, find a good dealer and get your spyder taken care of properly.

Parking Brake Problems

My parking brake has not worked from the day I bought it. I have had it adjusted (fixed) 3 times before I insisted on replacing the entire assembly. :banghead: I have been waiting for the parts since October. I am so used to leaving it in gear an chocking the wheels against the curb I could care less about the brake. I just want the message to quit flashing!

Ok lets try to clear up what I was asking

what I was trying to ask is if anyone was having trouble with the parking brake and the parking brake caliper. I think that I need to lubricate the cable somehow. The more I look at this problem the more I think that its the cable. To fix it all I have to do is turn the caliper or bracket by hand. The spring has plenty of tension and the cable is not in a bind anywhere. Here is a pic of what I am talking about.

It could be in the cable, but that is not all that likely. Be sure the ferrule at the end of the cable does not contact the rubber boot when the brake is engaged. If it does, it can cause problems. Adjust the cable properly for clearance with the brake fully engaged. If the brake won't engage after the cable is adjusted for clearance, you will need to rotate the lever one spline further.

You can pin the source of the problem down further by removing the cable from the lever. Rotate the lever by hand, and note any sticking. If it sticks here, I would have the dealer remedy it. That typ of proble probably lies in the caliper itself. A little lube at the shaft will not harm anything. While you have the cable off, raise the end as far as you can. pull the boot off the cable sheath, and lube the cable. Any oil should do it. Cables should not be greased (the exception to the grease if it slides, oil if it rotates rule), and WD-40 and such do not hold up well on cables.

Good luck!
