Parking Brake ....is That a dealer fix item?

P.W.

New member
We have a 2019 RTL and the dreaded parking park won't unlock! Luckily I carry 2 12mm wrenches with me all the time for just such an occasion.
I got the parking brake unlocked ......so we can still at least ride!

I believe this is a dealer fix item since it could be several item at fault......Correct??
Or can someone tell me what the problem is and I could fix it myself?

(I know the bike is still under warranty but the dealer is 100 miles away)

Thanks for your time and help!!

It's a dealer fix item especially under warranty. The issue is normally the electric part on your hand controls.

As Ken suggested take in for warranty it could be the parking brake motor and is expensive. Believe the 19's had issues with the parking brake motor.

Thanks Guy's...Kind of what I thought everyone would say.....But I always check SL before doing any to the bike!

I had 2 separate warranty parking brake issues. Ride it until it happens again, and take pictures of the codes it throws. There are 3 main components that can fail, 2 are the most common. With the codes and a video of the red parking brake symbol flashing red there can be no dispute that there is a problem. Some codes clear themselves, and depending on the quality of the dealership they may try to give you some runaround.
My first go around turned out to be the left hand switch pack, which is an all in one assembly. Has to be replaced in it's entirety. They did that, and it failed again a while later. That time it turned out to be the parking brake motor or actuator. It now appears to be completely fixed. IT's my personal belief that BRP farmed out a lot of items on the 2018-2019 models to the lowest bidder, which gives them the appearance of being unreliable. The drive line appears to be bulletproof, it's all the electronic stuff that will give trouble.
Somewhere in there is an position switch as well, but I have read very few if any reports on that failing.
One way to keep the dealership from holding your bike hostage (6 or 7 weeks in my case) is to schedule a diagnostic appointment on a while you wait setup, then have them call you when the parts arrive to be installed. I was only out of the bike for 5 days when I did it this way. You can still ride it with the failing parking brake. Carry the wrenches and some fold up chocks.

Thanks to all that replied! I will get a hold of the dealer Monday an see what happens.
Am out of line asking for a loaner bike until my is fixed??.....probably.

Had the same problem withe parking brake locking up, I unhook the brake a couple of time then reset it,now it is been working for a year now on my 2019 f3s ss
I still Carrie the 2 open end wrenches just in case they don't release.

You're not out of line asking. But that will depend on the dealership.
Which one are you taking it to? I bought my 18 at DR but have my service done at Sportsman in Algona. I had the P brake lock up on me right after I bought it. I backed the nuts off on the rear rear until I could move the F3. Loaded it up and took it back to DR. They had to replace both the right and left handle bar clusters. It wouldn't go into reverse either and the cruise would disengage by it's self. No issues since though.

FYI, The Fault codes that it shows are P1571, U0128
Not sure what that all means .....but I bet it has something to do with the parking brake.... ;)

U0128 = lost communication with Windshield Parkbrake Module

P1571, sorry, don't know, but from quick Net search it may have to do with your Left handlebar control assembly.

When my parking brake failed to release (this was last June) the whole assembly was replaced under warranty. When I picked it up, I spoke with the mechanic who worked on the Spyder. he showed me the motor & gear box assembly and told me that the reason for its failure - and mine was the second one he had replaced in as many days - was that the small gear on the motor was plastic, while the large gear that turns the pulley that pulls the cable is metal. There were no teeth left on the plastic gear, while the metal gear looked brand new. He also told me that they actually stock the part, as they have seen quite a number of failures. Of course the whole thing had to be replaced, you can't just replace the el cheapo plastic gear. So this is a problem that has the very high potential of happening again, and of course when it does, you won't be anywhere near a dealer.

Some '14 RTs had a problem with the parking brake motor, mine included, but mine was because the brake would not hold once set. The technician diagnosed it without taking off any Tupperware, ordered the part and I returned a week later to have it replaced in less than an hour.

Recently got a 2019 F3L and this thread has me concerned. Is there a link, perhaps with photos, as to what to do with those two 12mm wrenches?

Thanks.

I'm not computer savey or I would post some pics or video of what to do...... either someone will chime in and help or try searching.
It take about 2 mins to do loosen the two nuts and get back on the road....once you know how to do it.

It's actually fairly simple wmjk....

Get down low enough on the muffler side of your Spyder so that you can see the rear disc brake. You should be able to see that there's a lever sticking out of the front/bottom of the brake assembly with a cable running from the front of the machine attached to it. That lever & cable activates the Park Brake, and if you look closely, you'll see the cable cover is held onto a bracket by a couple of 12mm nuts, leaving the naked wire bit of cable running on to where it hooks over the actuating lever. Got that? :dontknow:

IF your Park Brake ever 'Locks On', you can simply use the 2 x 12mm spanners to realease those 2 nuts, 1 on either side of the bracket, so that you can slip the cable out of the bracket & get enough slack to un-hook the end of the cable from the actuating lever (you do need a fair bit of effort & slack - the actuating lever is spring loaded!) then slip the cable back into the bracket & tighten the 2 nuts back up again so that the cable doesn't fall out or flap around into anything it shouldn't! That will leave the wire bit & the hooky end hanging free, but they're held firmly by the bracket & can't interfere with anything. Once the cable is unhooked from the actuating lever, the Park Brake will release - it's only the cable holding it tight that keeps it on.

Then away you ryde - just remember that the SE Spyder's WILL roll once stopped & you shut down the engine, even if you leave your SE in gear; their clutch disengages the rear wheel from the trans unless there's engine revs &/or oil pressure present! And in some few circumstances, the Park Brake 'Not Set' Alarm or 'Still Set' Alarm might sound - just ignore the racket for 20-30 seconds & it'll stop! ;)

So THAT is why it's always a good idea to have at least one 12mm Open Ended Spanner & a smallish adjustable wrench in your tool pack (or 2 x 12mm OE spanners) along with a couple of small collapsible wheel chocks in the bottom of the trunk or frunk! Most will never get to use them in anger, but hey, you never know! :ohyea:

Thanks Peter for helping out! It would have taken me two hours to type that up.....LOL
Anything mechanical I'm fairly decent at.....computers no so much....
