Parking Brake - How Many Clicks?

Generally, after how many clicks do you stop pushing down on and engaging the parking brake on Spyder GS/RS?

Thanks

I hardly, if ever, use it on my SM. Just leave it in first gear unless I happen to be on a very steep incline. When I do use it I'd say 3 clicks.

Wow, 3 clicks. On my brand new RS 2010 I use one click and it locks it up nice and good. I don't want to push it more then that, as it takes a good amount of force to get the first click and works fine at that setting.

Mine is brand new (RS 2010), so perhaps that indicates the difference in the number of clicks. I suspect your brakes are worn in more then mine.

Thanks for the reply.

I just had a badly stretched cable replaced. It now locks up tight with one or 2 clicks.

Thanks for the reply, Littlejohn, I appreciate it.

I checked my Spyder while rolling it on the garage floor, slightly, with just one click, and it's solid, but I don't get the feeling the cable is stretched or strained too much, which is good. I think, as it is brand new, the one click seems to do the job, nicely.

I've also checked it on a jack. One click locks it good, but again, not to the point where it is an issue.

Seems like the parking brake is working good and it does not stick or get stuck on release. :)

Just curious...
Thanks!

I keep mine at 2 clicks. My advice is to leave it in gear if your on a incline.
If the brake lets go the bike will roll. :yikes: A bike rolling down hill without a
rider will get your attention real quick :opps: Don't ask me how i know :gaah:

Your parking brake sounds like it was set up by the dealer fine. One or two clicks is what you want. More clicks and it is time to adjust. As long as your parking brake isn't dragging when off. From this and your other question about resistance to turning the rear wheel it sound like your dealer got it right.

Thank you, guys!

Spec is one or two clicks. I adjust mine if it gets to be more than four.
I should have been more specific, and said that this spec was provided by my technician, after he did the parking brake service bulletin. Don't know if the spec is in the service bulletin, or was provided by the BRP tech people, but that's what he was told to adjust it to. I don't think it is real critical, but if it is too loose, it will not hold, and tends to stick and not release.

Before the parking brake fix I had to clean & lube the mechanism weekly, and it still stuck. I have had absolutely no trouble with it since the parking brake fix, as long as I keep it adjusted properly. It holds well, and releases every time. We use it regularly. I have also not had to adjust it much since the cable finally stretched out well.

When mine was new 1 click would do (that rhymes), but now not so much. I don't use it enough to bother with the adjustment.

I don't remember any more.... after trying to get it fixed twice I just gave up. Haven't used it in like forever. But I think it was like about 3 clicks.

I definitely need to get mine adjusted. My wife's Spyder works at 1 or 2 clicks, but mine takes at least 4 now. I have a very hard time releasing it while sitting on the Spyder, so I have started doing so before mounting and still have trouble at times. I suppose this will be a good test to give the next dealership I visit.

I probably wouldn't use it either, if it wasn't for that annoyingly loud beep when you shut off the SE5 and don't have the parking brake set. :(

I suggest you learn to do it yourself (or teach your wife, LOL). This is one of the quickest and easiest maintenance procedures on a Spyder. Look in your Owner's Guide.

Video on Adjusting the Spyder RS/GS parking brake!

This looks like a great and very valuable, detailed video!

Cheers - I hope this helps some, it will help me when the time comes.

Thanks Scotty and groundeffect. I figured it would be an easy thing to do myself as well. However, since the dealership we used to go to was forced to shut their doors we have been hunting for a new one. I am trying to come up with simple tests for their mechanics to do in order to see how good of a job they do, and how they treat my Spyder.

This is probably way too simple though. Do you have any other suggestions for a test? I already know to look for dirty hands. :D
