I have less than 600 miles on my new Spyder. So far I have not experienced any of the problems I keep reading about but am growing concerned about overheating and engine fires and 2012 (joke).

Seriously, what should I be aware of and what, if anything, can I do to prevent the problems and disasters some of you have had? Is it a matter of prevention or just a matter of time?

I bought my Spyder last October (JUST before it got too cold-darn!) and have about 2600 miles on it. I had the steering recall done -- noticed no problems before or after.

I LOVE my Spyder and have had absolutely NO problems with it. We go for day long rides just about every weekend during the riding season (my husband has a Harley). We go, we ride, we have a wonderful time and we come home -- NO problems!

The nature of a forum like this is that we post when we have problems or questions, looking for an answer or letting others know what's going on. It's just like the news media -- GOOD news isn't news -- BAD news is!

Sooooo try not to worry and just ENJOY your wonderful SPYDER!!!

Ride and have fun---- don't over-fill the gas tank (don't top it off by clicking more fuel in after the pump shuts off) - and if you notice extreme gas smells - go see your dealer.

The chances of your Spyder igniting are still pretty slim.

. . . . it is hard to know what is "right" when you don't have anything to compare it to.

This is where things like this forum, other Spyder riders in your area, and the dealership come in. The dealership should tell you if there is something "unusual" going on with your Spyder, something out of the "norm". Comparing and discussing issues can help too.

I have ridden for over 40 years, but reading the issues, experiences and sensitivities that some have, it is easy to get nervous and uncertain. But, I am prudent and practical ( to my way of thinking, at any rate ) and take everything I read into account and then go out ride.

The Spyder is PERFECT for a "daring adventure". That is how I want to think of my life - and I do. If something happens . . . . well, I will fix it or adjust. There is just not enough time in a life to spend it worrying and letting that rob you of enjoyment.

My feeling is the huge majority of Spyder owners are happy and have had a great experience.

It's like those distorted pictures where the person has a HUGE head and a tiny body. A single feature or set of features are blown up way out of proportion.

That is what tends to happen on any forum, not just this one.

When you use a mangifying glass to pull a splinter what do you do? You ignore almost your entire body (that is working fine) while greatly enlarging a very small area where you focus intently.

I doubt that there has ever been a production vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine that has not had a number catch fire. It is not great that a few Spyders have burned but it is to be expected.

Whatever vehilcle you are driving right now has had a percentage go up in flames. Do you worry about that? No. Why not? Becuase you aren't reading posts made by a group of people focused on it.

There is nothing wrong with focusing on Spyder issues. It goes a long way towards solutions and I, for one, appreciate all the attention.

But at the same time it is VERY Important to put it all into proper perspective.

You can't have fun if you're worried about your ride. Stuff happens. Every day, hundreds of people have heart attacks too. But most people don't sit around worrying about it.

Like any vehicle. If something seems wrong with your Spyder, check it out yourself or get it checked out.

We bought our SE5 last November and now have 25,000 miles on it (just completed a 13,624 mile trip without any issues except having the rear tire replaced and 2 tail light bulbs and a license plate bulb had to be replaced). If I had made a decision from what I was reading before I bought it, I would have stayed away, but I did not. Maybe we got a lucky one, but I don't think so. Did dealer set-up help? Maybe. Does the way I ride help? I think so. Do I have any serious concerns from reading all the negatives? Absolutely not. The human nature of any forum is that we only hear the one side of a negative issue...there are always 2. So, may I encourage you to ride and enjoy your Spyder. What may or may not happen is a bridge to be crossed at the time. Have fun and Ryde Safe.

O.K. JUST "GO"!

Do yourself a favor and just jump on your Spyder and ride and DO NOT WORRY about all the things you've read and heard! Just enjoy the wind in your face and all the smells around you.(well some of them!) Sure the Spyder may break down but you know what that car of yours can too and do you really worry about that when you go for a drive? Yes the Spyder does make a lot of unusual noises but your car does too but the car makers have done a great job of keeping that noise away from us(thank you!). Remember the Spyder is running on eight legs SOOOOOOO!!!!!! How much huffing and puffing do WE do when we run on our TWO legs.
SO stop worrying about breaking down and if and when it does THEN START WORRYING!!!! NOT BEFORE JUST "ENJOY:!!!

The others said it all, but yes, get on the :spyder2: and don't worry about anything. If a problem arises (happens with anything) come here and post or look around for your solution.
It's a great machine, and fun, and cool.....

Of course for an old geezer like me, the cure for paranoia about a bike was to get on your Triumph, Harley, Indian, or AJS and hope you made it to your destination with all your parts and clean fingernails. Worrying about it did no good. A ride was always a gamble, a challenge, and an adventure. I suppose it has changed now...but not for me. I still don't think about the destination until I finally arrive. Like the nice folks said, the problems you read are out of proportion. Most of our Spyders are very reliable, and only mildly annoying at their worst. Just throw your leg over and enjoy the ryde!

Don't worry about aynthing .you may not cross that bridge at all and ryde it for manny years haveing the time of your life like duddly and jen they went west cost to east cost and back and not a problem but miner mantness tire bolbs so my thinking is bye one ryde it like you stold it have a Ball.come to Laconia New Hampsher bike week ryde with us there in 2010 June 12 to the 19 if you cant find a place to stay let me no we have condo 1 mile from wares beach room for 4 more people.$200. a person for food and Beer Let us no ....vt228 Don.....
