Overwhelmed........

I am searching for/reading about/researching Spyders. I have lurked on this site for weeks. ;) I am overwhelmed with the amount of literature I have read along with the subtle differences in newer model Spyders. I am at the point where everything is all jumbled up in my head and I want the buying process over with so we can get on with riding! From everywhere I have searched (using the magic of the Interwebs) I am finding HUGE price discrepancies from forums, to craigslist, to ebay, to ebay dealers. I am pretty sure :dontknow: that I am in the market for a RSS SM5. I found a 2012 that fits my needs in Greenville, TX at Louis Motorsports. The out the door price is 14k, although I would have to register it and pay taxes once back home in Tennessee. I am all about a fly and ride from Tx :ohyea: as I have a week off next week for our school's fall break. I think I can fly for around $100. Am I missing something here? I am finding this same Spyder model everywhere else for $16,000 and higher; sometimes those are used bikes for that price. It is the color I want and everything seems legitimate. Is something going on that has devalued these machines to the point that private sellers owe more than they are worth? I am overwhelmed to the point I have created a spreadsheet to try to figure it all out. Your input is valued and much appreciated.

I look forward to Spyder ownership (if I can ever get past the confusion stage of buying one) and hopefully meeting some of you folks to ride with. Any tips, hints, do's, don't do's, etc. are welcome. Thanks for providing an awesome forum; I think it fairly represents the positives and negatives of the bikes.

Best,
Katie
(I still have questions galore; I see the older models are prone to recalls, Can Am has changed the badging since they introduced the Spyder to the market and I still have not figured out the differences in those models!)

$14K for a brand new RSS?????

Take it and run! I paid $17,300 out the door in NJ for RS SE5 model back in June and thought it was good deal. $14K for RSS model sound like an unbelievable deal. Good luck!

Quick overview from my perspective.............

BRP originally introduced the Spyder as a GS, then changed to RS (Roadster Sport) designation to create the Roadster category.

I understand Louis Motorsports made a very large order of 2012 models and received very healthy discounts for doing this. I'm sure they were taking a risk and BRP was probably looking to reduce their inventory of 2012 models to make room for the new 2013's and the excitement that would bring. It's kind of proving out. The only thing I'd make sure of is for Louis Motorsports to provide you with a complete, detailed bill of sale so you can bring the cashier's check with you. Make sure there aren't additional charges after you've made the trip, i.e.: set-up charges, admin fees, etc.

Good luck, good ryding and go for it!!!

@Boomerkc - question

The hype about the 2013....have they changed substantially enough for me to consider waiting on 2013's? Are they going to be $5k better?

thanks,
Katie

Every State has different Tax implications... Every Dealer chooses the profit expectations including accessories and warranty work... Fleebay is hit and miss for any vehicle...

And at the end of the day. I can say that one of our sponsors to this site... Has two RS models for less (Right on the windshield of the bikes, no negotiations required) than you just suggested in SE5 and SM5 this past weekend... So it is up to you on what the value/time is worth what savings...

I will also add. That "Many" dealers do not post online their actual inventory and prices. I have found the prices overall to be a bit less than they advertise. And most I visit have more inventory (In some cases 5x's more) than they offer online as their inventory.

Right now is a great time to buy while the BRP rebates to the dealers are in effect. Otherwise there may only be one more time before the "New model" forces the normal deep deal rebates early next year...

Welcome and good luck in your hunt

Katie,
Welcome to our "little" family! :2thumbs:
Don't worry about feeling overwhelmed... soon that feeling will be replaced by, "sheer terrror" and finally, "resignation"! :roflblack::roflblack: :joke:
(In case you didn't know this; I can be safely ignored... The term, "fool" seems to follow me! ;))

That seems like a reasonable price for an SM5. AFAIK Louis Motorsports does good business, they appear to be one of the less expensive dealers in the country, but still reputable.

That said, are you certain you want an SM5 and not an SE5? If you haven't ridden a Spyder with the semi-auto transmission, you owe it to yourself to try it out. Sure, it'll up your initial price, but the SE5 is a marvel of engineering, it's one of those things unique to the Spyder that dramatically ups the fun factor.

RE: fly and ride... personal opinion, I'd be wary of doing that with a Spyder, if only because dealer setup is so important, i.e. if you're going to discover a problem with your bike, there's a strong chance you'll discover it within those first few hundred miles. You don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a curious problem. Likewise, breaking in a Spyder during a road trip isn't all that much fun (even if you subscribe to an "aggressive" breaking in of a bike, that's still a long trip from Texas to Tennessee).

I'm thinking that my next Spyder purchase may be from Cowtown in a few years-- yes, dealer setup is that important!-- but if so I'm already committed to the idea of spending a few days riding through my break-in period near the dealer, then getting my 600 mile service done, *then* returning home just to be on the safe side.

My first response is to "Keep it Simple"........(:yikes:)

Secondly, I'm a big fan of the free market system. Just what is "that" spyder worth to you? If that figure floats your boat, then pull the trigger and don't look back. (second guessing)

I too had to make a decision of whether to fly out to Texas and Louis Power Sports. At that time (one week before the 2013's came out) I was looking into the price of an RT-S. I was quoted (although not in writing) a great price. All the "signs" were there for me to fly out and buy a spyder. I didn't.

I didn't because I was not familiar with that dealership and was many miles away if I had problems. I also didn't because I never received a written quote and didn't want to be stranded in Dallas haggling over terms. I didn't because I have a certain loyalty to my dealer here in Sanford, Florida.

On hindsight I'm glad I didn't because I waited a week and ordered a 2013 and have a very reputable dealer who will be working on my spyder for the next couple of years to come.
Additionally, Seminole Power Sports gave me what I consider a fair price for what I (emphasis added) wanted and was willing to pay. I for one am not looking back.

The 2013's will be out soon

With the 13's soon to be in dealerships I am sure they want to get the 12's off the floor. With the ST line being introduced I am betting that is going to take away from the RS sales so they really want to sell what they have.

That is more of a personal opinion at this time because so few have "Tested" the new versions.

I would add this... It will be more like a $5000-$8000 (MSRP) (As dealers are trying to liquidate last years leftovers and used market get an injection from those moving to newer models) question next spring as more butts are in the 2013 models and overflowing these forums with excitement.

Having owned three models... The ryde is worth what you are willing to pay, and the time you choose to wait or not wait. There will always be the "Next best thing" coming as long as we live in a Consumer World. Now had this been Oct of 2013... You could let your own seat of the pants decide.

@Freethinker.....

The difference in price between what you're looking at currently and the 2013 is a significant amount to me. Is it worth $5K more, that's a decision only you can make. IMHO, I'd probably go for the 2012 at the price you said. You'd save money (more for the mods you'll want to do) and have it to ryde now!!

There are two models a present: an RS and a RT. Sporster and Touring. Forget that a GS and a RS are the same thing as you are not interested in that vintage.

$14K for a new bike seems like a good deal. These bikes depreciate very fast or as fast as any other motorized vehicle. A used 2008 RS with a couple of thousand miles on it will sell for 8-10K or about half of what they were new.

All of these bikes are functional and reliable. The ones that have had desing problems have been fixed. With rare exception the ones that continue to have problems are owner induced usually through modifications. Bottomline is buy one, change the oil and don't mess with it and you should be fine.

There is a new model coming out that is a RS with some upgrades. It will be six months probably, before any of those are available. A new one of those will push $20K. Since the changes to it are mostly cosmetic, they shoud bypass some of the early release problems the other two models had.

I too am given to the paralysis of analysis on occassion. The one exception I have made to this is the Spyder which I bought after seeing a picture of it. After 50k miles it is still the most fun thing I have ever driven.

Price match

I would ask your local dealer if he will price match or come close to the price at Louis.

don't let anyone here tell you that the 2013 model is worth $5,000 more than the 2012 models because a new vehicle loses 20% of it's value when you drive it off the lot.

The 2012 RSS will be worth $14,000 next year so you can essentially drive it for a year and sell it for what you paid. The 2013 will lose all its value when the 2014 comes out.

Another way to view the vehicle pricing during new model years is to use the "car/truck" scenario most of us are familiar with. If we were to purchase a NEW 2012 vehicle off the lot after the 2013s were out and trade it in a week later, the NADA would be valuing the vehicle the same as if we had purchased it at the beginning of the 2012 model year. It is now a used 1 year old vehicle. I think the purchase price should reflect that full year or more of depreciation and not merely a token couple of thousand off the purchase price.

Irrelevant statement

Rar,

not to be rude, but we all understand how a vehicle depreciates in value. But if you buy a 2012 car when the 2013's are on the lot you should have gotten such a great deal that if you trade it in even a whole 11 months later you will still get most of your money, if not all of it, back.

the value isn't different. Just the amount you paid

I bought from Louis Powersports in April this year and saved $3000.00 thru them. Very good people to deal with. I dealt with Curtis and it was one of the easiest deals ever for me. When I was there 2 weeks ago to pick up my RT622 trailer there was an enormus stack of crates out back, Curtis said they had over 100 Spyders at that time and more were on the way. I wouldn't hesitate one second buying from them. The setup on mine must have been spot on never a second of problem.

Sorry. :opps:

Wouldn't hurt to give Len a call at Cowtown or Roberts Power Sports in Saranac, NY...Both are high value sales folks with tremendous reputations for setup, service, pricing...Don't know what kind of figures they'd quote but a email or phone call might give you other options...We went from Michigan to Cowtown in Missouri to buy a used RS for my wife just because of Len's reputation for service which is something I don't get here...Good luck with your purchase...

Nobody in the country is beating that dealer in Texas pricing right now. For example, they are selling new 2012 RT's on Ebay for 18k. I say, fly to Texas and save thousands.

I bought from LOUIS POWERSPORTS about 2 weeks ago 2012 RSS SE5 :ani29: one thing I can say especially for Curtis the sales rep the out the door price is what he says no additional charges other than your local taxesnojoke. I searched hi and low LOUIS had the best price I saved over 3 grand and that's including having it shipped. I dont know why but their prices can't be beat. You cant find a used one cheaper!!!
