• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Okay, need some feedback...

So earlier I had asked you all what color you thought I should paint my saddlebags, and it seems to most thought gloss black would be best, and I agree. Since then I have been working on getting some quotes for the job and wanted to know what you think.

I have had three places quote me around $400 - $500

I have had two places that said they wouldn't touch them at all

And I had one place quote me $850!!

Now one of the three places that quoted me $500 told me that they would be able to work with my budget, which is about $300ish. I am supposed to go down there tomorrow to see if that can be done.

The place that quoted me $850, I basically asked them if they were out of their minds. I seriously think some places like to take advantage of us because of how unique the Spyder is. A lot of people think it's like this $50,000 machine and that their owners are loaded with money

Oh, and these are all reputable body shops (not Maaco or the like).

What are your thoughts?

Around here when it comes to paint you get what you pay fore find someone in the middle and check out some of there work :doorag:

Yeah, I hear ya. I ride hard and the Spyder takes a beating so I am not looking for the showroom quality paint job, just something decent that isn't going to peel or fade on me two or three years down the road.

The place that is willing to work with me is local (about 5 miles from my house) and he does good work and feedback from the people that have had work done there is positive.

I tend to think that if three places are all quoting me about the same, that's probably about just right. That place that quoted me $850, I really just think he's trying to take advantage of me. :cus:

:agree:850.00 would be out the window you use your ride so durability and good decent job is what I would go fore

I wouldn't jump the conclusion that the $850 is taking advantage of you. Here's my take from being on the other side of this kind of thing.... you get what you pay for.... I would seriously question anyone that could paint all your 'silver parts' including the Corbin Bags for less than $600 - $800.

Quality is EVERYTHING when it comes to paint jobs-- and while you don't want 'show room quality', you ride hard and a lot --- so you want something that will REALLY hold up well and is done RIGHT the first time. Doesn't save you any money if you have to have them re-done.

I see this in my business (printing) every day. People price shop us against other 'similar' shops... and we are almost always the most expensive in my town. Why? Because we do a better job than any of the other guys - and we tell the customer that, show them samples and guarantee their job. If there is a quality problem the job is automatically re-done. This is a rare occasion and happens before the customer even knows as we inspect everything before it goes out the door.

We don't 'price match' -- that is a sure fire way to go out of business. The guy around the corner might be able to do the job cheaper, but he also might not doing it using a few million dollars worth of the latest equipment. I can't let him set my pricing as my overhead is different than his.

The lower cost paint guys might use cheaper paint, cheaper equipment, less qualified staff, and not do as good of a job.

Now..... all that being said... just because the one guy is higher doesn't mean he's going to do the best job either... you would have to judge that on seeing their work.

Just remember--- if you're paying top dollar for a paint job--- you've got every right and expectation to have a PERFECT job done.

With the lower priced guys you may not have much room to complain if it's not 'perfect'. Just depends on what you're really looking for.

Most cities have a guy or two that is well known and respected for painting motorcycles... BUT... you also have to make sure they know how to paint plastic.

I've seen bad, good and great Spyder paint jobs. Maybe if some others that have had them done can tell you what they paid and what quality they got that will help you. I really don't think the $850 is bad.

Let us know what you come up with.

If you are talking just the bags, then I would check out both of the lower quote shops and see how good of a job they do. I was quoted $600 just to paint my black panels a different color, so $400 doesn't sound too far off the mark for painting those bags.

If they both have samples of good quality work, that you would be happy seeing on your Spyder, then talk to the one that is willing to work with you on the cost as well. There are usually some things you can do to help them out and that can bring the cost down a little. In my case I was going to bring him just the panels that I wanted painted, so he did not have to do the tear down and reinstall of the tupperware. After careful consideration, I ended up going with the graphics kit instead as I can always have it painted later if I still desire.

Best of luck on getting a good quality paint job for the price that is comfortable for you as well.

Thank you all so much for your feedback and you all make very good points.

First of all, the bags aren't plastic, so no problems there. And I had told everyone upfront that no disassembly/reassembly or extra body work needed to be done. I still do have a hard time believing that it cost $850 just to paint the saddlebags, that just seems off the mark to me.

I am going to see what this shop right here in town can do for me. I've read good reviews about his business and have seen some of his work. He also is the only place to seems to really want to work with me. The shop that wanted $850 is a bigger corporate type business and this shop is a mom and pop type of place that is well known in the community.

So I am thinking that $400 is probably about right and $850 is just too much.

I'll let you know how it all plays out. Thanks again. :doorag:

Ahhh... I was thinking you were getting some panels painted at the same time with the bags for some reason (I really need to lay off the crackpipe ;)).

So yeah--- $850 for just the bags does sound on the high side.

I'm all for using a 'mom and pop' place.

Post pics!

I was going to get the panels painted but I opted to just buy the pre-painted pieces from BRP, about the same cost.

I'll get some pics up as soon as I can. Right now I have a blue hood, red side panels, red console, red rear fender, silver bags, silver trunk, and silver front fenders... I'm very colorful at the moment! :D

I hope some of my blue panels are at my dealer when I go by there tomorrow (going in with my neighbor to pick up his "new" 2008 SM5).

Oh my.... that must just look wonderful right now... kind of like the Partridge Family Bus.... :roflblack:.

I would let them have one of the blue panels to match to when you take the bags in.....

Yeah, it sure is colorful.... red, blue, black, and silver nojoke

I thought about painting the bags painted blue but opted to go with plain gloss black. :2thumbs:

Geesh.. my brain is REALLY fried today... yeah-- DUH... you're going with BLACK bags-----so I meant to give them a black panel to match up to......

That's it--- I'm going to the bar!

RIGHT!

And it's 5 o'clock somewhere! :roflblack:

Take me with you!!!!!!! :D

The price here by me is $800 for all the colored parts. Take all the red parts and paint them whatever or the yellow and so on.

i think anywhere between 300-500 bucks is reasonable for the bags. The 850 guy is trying to hose you. I can get all colored panels done on my bike for 8-900 bucks and that's top rated work.

Yeah, that was exactly my thought. When they told me $850, I basically told them to take a long walk off a short pier.

So it sounds like I am on the right track.....

Dropped the bags off for paint... settled with the local place for $400. They'll be done by the end of the week. :ohyea:
