Oil Usage

Hello again !!! I was just wondering if any one has had a problem with excessive oil useage between service intervals ? I am planning on a trip and I do not want to take any extra items that I don't need, so I would not take an extra quart of oil, and that would save me a little room. I have not expierenced any oil usage up to now, but was just wondering if any RT Limited riders have had to add oil between services? I have about 2600 miles on now, and will be going about 1500-1800 miles on this little trip.

On my 2010 RT-S I use 1/2 qt. to 3/4 of a qt every 3000 miles. Same in my 08 RS. Taking extra oil is not taking up space. Taking 2 pairs of boots is.:roflblack: If it isn't smoking or leaking you are fine. Check your oil more often. Make sure you don't mix regular oil in with the synthetic. That's a NO NO:lecturef_smilie: Make sure it reads on the oil bottle "Engines, Transmission, Wet Clutch"
PS.
Before checking the oil, start engine and let it run for 30 seconds. Turn off engine, wait a minute then check the oil.

At about 12,000 miles I had my service done and went on a 2350 trip with no oil use. We did mostly 4 lane(no superslab) and 2 lane back roads riding so we didn't have real high speeds. That may have made a difference. After we got home I wanted the shop to check the front end because of the rough roads in New York and Vermont to see if alignment was out and had the oil changed again since I was there anyway.

I would take a quart with you. I think all Spyders use some oil, the nature of the beast. The owners manual doesn't tell us to check the oil frequently for nothing.

Take a quart with you, If you don't have room for a quart, Your probably packing too must stuff. :dontknow:

Also agree. And you aren't going to find the synth wet clutch oil just anywhere. Say for some reason you do end up needing oil on your trip and you are in the middle of nowhere at a Caseys General store, you may only see 10w30 store brand oil not to be used in your spyder.

IMHO better safe than sorry. Pack the correct oil and take it with you. I recently went on a longer trip and I relegated the passenger bag to emergency stuff and my travel cover. I qt Oil, a tiny funnel, a Reda gas can, tool kit, I even added some regular pliers, hammer and screwdrivers, small LED flashlight,, because you just never know. And I didn't want to be sitting on the side of the road saying to myself, "If I'd only have brought _____"

Ok, you have changed my mind.

:opps:Ok, I guess I was being a little foolish---------- Like that hasn't happened before!!!:D
I think some of you miss understood though, or I didnt write it correctly....I have had my 600mile service....Course it was at 800 miles So it has only been about 1800 since last service, but I think over all you are all correct and I will take a quart with me  Better SAFE, than sorry..I just wondered as I have not had much oil usage up till now, anyhow..... hope that no oil usage continues........Thanks, again for the responses and I am sure I will be back with some other tid-bit as time goes on.... :D

My wife’s RT will use about ½ qt in about 2000 miles. I have found that for me to add oil I use a small funnel, keep it in the bag with the oil and rags.

Mine uses a little also.... Has made me less of a smart a... about Harleys and oil use....

Willy

We rode 5500 miles and used around 3/4 qt. Pretty rough on the Spyder, towing a trailer and a passenger. I figgered we would use more.

Billy: Large difference between "using" oil and "LEAKING"! :roflblack:

*awaits response from Lou* :)

I had the oil changed when I got the RT (1100 miles), and at roughly 3K miles - now at 4400, I needed a full quart to bring it up - my suspicion is that our local stealer either didn't fill the tank, or didn't change the oil, just charged me for it…. Getting ready for another 2K mile trip & we'll see what happens then. If it uses a full quart over that, I'll have some serious thinking to do…..

Being a dry sump means our Spyder engines are full all the time so adding oil is not as bad as we think. The problem is how much. A quart in 3000 miles is nothing to complain about. Some cars use that much or more and dealers will tell you that is acceptable. I check mine every 1000 klms (600 miles) and won't add till it is almost to the lower mark and I only check it after a long ride so the oil is darn good and Hot. My consumption is close to a quart but after the 2400 mile mark I don't check it again, I just change it.

We're talking a quart in 1400 miles - 3/4 of a quart, just to see anything on the dipstick. Should have learned never to trust a dealer by now...

Sounds like 1 quart in 2000 miles if you are at 1400 with 3/4 to bring you to full. Now let's think about this, add the last 1/4 quart at 2000 miles and then you are back to the full mark and you can just drive it to the 3000 mile mark and change the oil. Sure it wasn't full but you are draining it anyway. Might be more then mine but not that much and as I said, your resivoir is low, not your engine. I still think the 990 Rotax is working it's heart out pushing the RT through the wind. It is fine for the RS but not quite right for a bigger (209 lb heavier) bike. My opinion!

Have a friend with a Commander 1000 on his farm. Runs it loaded, with some kind of trailer - also loaded. With 2100 miles on the clock, he hasn't used a drop. That's over 1100#, plus several hundred additional, running flat out across 900 acres. I am sure my RT would be in a pile of useless bits after a week of that... Both are Rotax 990 motors.

Excessive oil use

My wifes RTS was using oil at same rate as many mentioning here, I was usuing the Rotell 5w-40 synthetic, I was concerned about this prior to our trip to Alaska so I switched to the old standby 10w40 Mobil 1 I have always used in my bikes, Problem solved, in the 10,600 mi. trip to Alaska she used 2/3 of a quart pulling her trailer. We live in southeast Texas and are in a terrible drought and experiencing 100deg. plus days for a while now . 2008 My Yamaha Venture has now 105,000 mi.with the Mobil 1 and on our trip used "o" oil pulling our bunkhouse. My wifes RTS is at 38,500 mi. now and the excessive oil use seems stopped, now is almost none between oil changes . I must also add that both bikes went the trip on the same oil and it looked great when I changed it when we returned. This oil is not energy conserving and is availabler almost everywhere, is the oil listed as High mileage .I have run it for years and do my own maint. so I have senn the inside of my valve cover on my bike and can tell you over 100,000mi. and looks like it was just assembled.
