There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. OIL, OIL, OIL...

If the oil you put in is the kind that the service manual recommends (see my post above) you should be just fine. If in doubt, call your dealer and ask them for their recommendations. The brand of oil is irrelevant...type matching the specks is critical. That is why BRP uses the words "or equivilent" in the shop manual.
:agree: Look on the container. The old oil was rated SL. That is what BRP specifies. The new oil is rated SM, which BRP prohibits. What I don't understand is how the new oil can still carry the JASO MA label if it is hazardous to wet clutches.

The clutch went on my SE5 at 7000 miles. Thanks to BRP, it was covered under warrenty and the work was done at PRO Shops in Henderson, NV. 3 days and back home. As for the reason the clutch was slipping, wrong oil. I started with BRP brand blended oil. I changed to Mobil 1. When I pulled this oil out, after the clutch started slipping, it smelled burned big time. I put Castrol synthetic in but it didnt help. Damage was done. I right away changed my wife's oil from Mobil 1 to Castrol. No damage to hers. Dealer mechanic said the mobile1 is way to slick for Spyders. Stay with the blended. Anyway, the dealer was right on top of repair and I am happy with the great service. BRP tech support said usally they dont cover wear parts but as the Spyder was in great shape and tires were not bald, they covered. Yeah... Going back to BRP oil. No more chances.
It's good to know about the oil as I thought my dealer was just saying to use brp oil because of he sells brp products.
1 month ago I had a new engine and trans se5 replaced under warranty due to very bad vibrations, I was using castrol 5w/40 sync it is recomended for spyders by castrol, it doe's not have the additves which the se5 req, where as the brp summer grade has.
So im staying with the brp brand and filters
while Im on about filter has anyone notice the holes in the after market filters are smaller then the gen filters? and if so do you think this could restrict the oil flow?:chat:

guess ill be changing my oil before I ride. Just looked in the manuel it says do not use SM or ilsac GF-4 classification oil. MOBIL 1 racing 4T is SM classification. :cus::gaah:

I am am disappointed with this oil talk....Hmmm, I have been using Mobil 1 synthetic 15w-50 in my scoots and vehicles for 25+ years and never had an oil related failure. To tell the truth, I never paid much attention to the ratings.

I turned 59K on my Wing yesterday. I have to beat it with a stick to make it stop running....on my scoots, I run dino oil for 4,000 miles and then go to Mobil 1 and never look back. Five quarts for $22 at Wal-Mart....and change oil and filter every 8,000-10,000 miles.

After reading your posts, it seems I will have to change my thinking on Spyder oil.

I read you folks use Amsoil, Motul, etc. I would be hard pressed to find either of these oils around here, however I actually never looked. Does any of the "regular oils" ie, Pennzoil, Mobil 1 (not syn), Castrol regular grades work...10-40 etc?

As many know, I am NEW to the Spyder world and paying $7-8 a quart makes me tense...however if I have to, I will adjust...I just won't like it.

Do you change oil/filters (both) every 3,000?

I am sure learning a lot of stuff from you guys....I appreciate this web site. My GL1800 trike site is getting into "I said, you said", personal attacks, clever remarks (not) etc...so I spend much more time here and much less there. My bag is... ride, eat and talk trikes....Thanks to all of you for staying on course.

If any of you see a flatbed with crates of Spyders, ask the driver if he has a red RT-S and is going to Lytle, TX....then let me know....

Indeed. Why they changed the spec is beyond me. I think I have enough of the old stuff for one more change and then I guess it is time to find another brand.

the oil i have is mobil 1 but the rating is api sg'sh/cf jaso ma that is what the rating on the bottle,so is that ok/?it says motorcycle oil good for wet clithes.the ratings you sad sl and sm are not on my oil .i havent changed it yet let me know befor i do help:gaah:

I'm using Motul full synt.+ mokool coolant additive
and my heat dropped a bar, 15-17 degrees less...love it

The revised procedure for the SEs is to change both filters every oil (3K) change.

As long is the stuff you have is not labeled SM, it should be OK.

This is the second or third brand to change specs and labels in mid-stream. Lamont had trouble with the Rotella-T when Shell did that with their 5W-40, now the Mobil-1 thing and someone with clutch trouble. It just goes to show you, you need to pay close attention, even with your favorite and most trusted brands. Read the label every time you buy oil!
