• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Has anyone else, getting ready for a long trip, while changing the oil, have the crankcase drain plug shear off just inside of the hex plug? Putting the plug back on with about 5 pounds of force on the thing just sheared off. Of course it's on a Sunday when no one is open and you are in the middle of things.

Anyone else have this happen where it sheared?

Sorry to be so dense, but what sheared? The hex hole itself reamed out? Or the entire plug broke/sheared?

Not sure but I think you could get a replacement at an auto store:[h=2]

Here are the two sizes needed:

Engine Drain plug 12mm x 1.5, Reservoir 14mm x 1.5[/h] . I replaced mine with a Gold Plug that you use a socket to open/close. If you want my original to replace yours, I'll be glad to send it to you but it would take several days to get to Ca from NC. Email if you do.

Now nobody I know ever did this but a friend once told me about this guy that...

thought the drain plug was the same torx thread as the bolt next to it and thought he had sheared it when he really had just used the wrong tool. Then he drove an hour to the nearest dealer with a drain bolt in stock because he thought he had rounded out the female side of his drain bolt. Then he was so embarrassed when he realized his mistake he just bought the spare drain bolt anyway and walked out.

If you are desperate, I can arrange to have the spare overnighted to you if you pay shipping...

Drain plug

The plug sheared at the bottom of the hex hole where it bottoms out. Outside is tapered for the crush washer and it sheared about even with the crush washer. Use a torque wrench to tighten and elbow to get off. It does not matter where I set the wrench, it is always a pain to get the plug off. Will go to parts store and see what they have.
 
Have you checked the calibration on your torque wrench lately? If they are stored with the setting cranked up, they can take a set and fail to trigger at the proper torque. Ask me sometime about the chrome moly head studs I broke that way. If you don't dial the torque wrench all the way down to store it, it should be calibrated or replaced.
 
Been down this path... but it was from having the wrench set to tighten and snapping it off. Should be pretty easy to get out. If need be use a reverse drill bit. If you need to ride somewhere to have it worked on, dry it off really well, put some silicone on it so it won't vibrate out.

Hopefully you can get it out easily and put a new one in.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. I have used the fumoto's on 3 vehicles now with no issues.

Interesting idea.... but what about the magnetic properties of the OEM drain plugs? Don't know about you... but quite a few times I've pulled a lot of metal shavings off the drain plug.

you may have solved the problem. Most I've heard is stripping out the allen head. But that you can get them at the auto parts store and then they will be hex head.. Hope your done if not good luck..!! :thumbup:
 
I have a Gold reservoir plug if anyone wants it cheap. I stopped using it simply because everytime I go to drain the oil the strong magnet grabs on the side of the metal tank and oil gushes all over. PM if interested at half price shipped.

edit: if I remember I'll bring to MV friday in case anyone wants it. RT has "Norton" decals on rear bags. Staying at Applecover Inn.

I also had it happen to me, changed my own oil after having a dealer change it. Plug broke into two parts. Was able to just screw the part that was left in the pan with my finger. Replaced with gold plugs, no more problems. I bought a extra set, still have them. I'd sell em too. Will be in Maggie Valley, just look for the guy with a fedora on....
 
With the already low clearance of the Spyder, wouldn't they be more prone to come in contact with something?

I don't think the oil sump will be a problem, and yes, I thought it could be an issue, but even with the fumoto, there would be other lower lying parts alreadly there.... If I'm hitting something that hard in the road that would actually hit that valve... I probably have other problems.
