• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Oil Drain Bolt Won't Come Off Crankcase

Because the crankcase (alloy) and drain plug (steel) expand at different rates.
You can heat the area directly around the plug with a small torch, before grabbing
and removing pesky plug.

just warming engine won't do it, because that allows plug and crankcase to heat "together".

Concur; a small propane torch can heat up the surrounding area, and let you get it out. You can file or hacksaw a slot for a flat tip screwdriver, or vise grips. Used in combination, that plug is going! Joe

They have tools that are made to remove rounded off bolts, screws etc and work really well. They fit over the rounded off head and grip to it when you turn.

Sometimes a little heat will help too.

If it is stripped or seized, your only options are vise grips or a pipe wrench, get it high enough off the ground so you can see what you are working with and GET NEW PLUGS before doing this, so you don't have to wait for some reason for them to be ordered. I personally would not use heat, perhaps a smart tap with a hammer on the bottom of the plug will also smarten/loosen it up. No impacts, as TROUBLE will definetly follow. Good luck. Let us know how it worked out.

Use a impact gun and you could be in for more trouble..

Get a bolt extractor they work great as mentioned in this topic section

any way good luck:thumbup:

Once you've sorted out how to grab the rounded head using something like a Bolt Out head or vise grips or some other 'self tightening' spanner (& unless you want a shattered alloy crankcase that the sump plug screws in to, always try to avoid using an impact driver!!) it will still sometimes help to use something like Locktite Freeze & Release.

It can sometimes help if you use a small propane torch to warm up the surrounding alloy first, but it usually isn't necessary - just spray the sump plug itself for a second or two with the jet nozzle on the 'Freeze & Release' can, give it the recommended few seconds to permeate/work its magic & start the sump plug contracting in the cold (but not so much the surrounding metal) and then grab the plug & undo - remember; Righty = Tighty; Lefty = Loosey!

Most of the time you will only need to use the Freeze & Release spray, altho on a few very rare occasions I've had to resort to using the propane torch on the surrounding metal first. The stuff I've found works best is the Locktite Freeze & Release, but you might have a few more alternatives over there that are as good - me, I stick with Locktite, regardless of the product, you can buy it knowing it works as it was intended! ;)

the problem is the use of cheap soft wrenches, buy high quality tools and make sure that it is on fastener all the way

Lesson learned, its not a hex key that loosenes it. Its a star key. I always use the star key in the kit in the frunk..

T-45 STAR

Its both on the newer models. Mine is a 6mm hex and T45 Star
:lecturef_smilie:...We do mean " T-45 TORX "....right .........:thumbup:......Mike ...............Also on the Dimple vs. Gold plug , I bought the Gold Plug @ 1/2 the price of the Dimple brand ..........and the magnet is very, very powerful.

Thanks everyone for your great advice. I am going to tackle the drain plug very soon. Doing other projects on the Spyder first
and it's tooooo cooooold in the garage right now. So I will wait till it warms up a little more.

It's still winter here in Canada, but I will get back to all of you when I get her done.

Thanks again.:bowdown::yes:
