Oil Change Frequency on a 2014 RTL

I did a forum search and couldn't find anything past 2013. I cannot find any recommended mileage for the oil changes in the manual. Surely it's there, but I'm missing it somehow.

What is the recommended oil change interval for the new engines? Thanks.

The first oil change is recommended at 3000 miles. The subsequent oil change is recommended at 9,500 miles later (12,500). Then , every 9,500, or once a year, whichever comes first.

Thanks. You have answered my question. I saw that on pages 120-121, but thought they probably recommended an oil change in between. I've never seen a manufacturer's recommendation go beyond 3,000-5,000 miles before, so I thought I must be missing something. Very interesting.

It's in the Operators Manual under maintenance. The Guides are on CANAM/BRP website under Owner. Go to: http://can-am.brp.com/spyder/owners/guides-and-information.html Please read the whole thing.

If you do a search for oil change reports you will find several threads with the results of different types of oils and different mileages. It seems depending on the oil type, protection starts breaking down in the 4k to 6k range. After reading many I decided to start doing an interim change of just the oil and then oil/filter at recommended intervals. The oil change portion is easy enough and cheap insurance. I've been using Mobil 1 in everything for years with great results but some of the reports show the Shell Rotalla to be a contender.

I plan to change the oil & filter on my 2014 RT Spyder at 3,000 miles using Castrol full synthetic T4 motorcycle oil shown below available from Amazon for $45.17 delivered/6-qts..

Little checking..!!

Not seeing the new oils holding up well much past 4,000 miles. I change it around there and save the worry or the other oil related issues. If you put this kind od money into these machines why risk it. Don't see a six speed gearbox being any kinder to the oil in it. Lower rpms maybe but from some of the tests the oils still break down shortly after 4,000...:dontknow: manual will give you recommended intervals for changing your oils..

Also agree that changing the oil more often is not going to hurt. I believe someone, somewhere, quoting those ever elusive statistics, said that the average motorcyclists drive about 3,500 miles per year. I do think we are better than average here, so, we put on a few more miles in our mostly less than 12 month riding season.

BRP's suggestion that every 9,500 miles or once a year, should cover about 97.356789432 % of the cases. If you are a high mileage rider, I would also recommend a lesser in-between mileage--just to be safe. I would probably do it about 6,500 or 7,500 mile intervals in the high mileage per season scenario. The first oil change on the 1330 is recommended at 3,000 miles and not 600 miles like we did on the 990/two cylinder engines.

My new 2014 ACE triple is going into the shop when the season starts in March/April here. It has 9,500 miles on it. Oil was changed at the recommended 3,000 for the first go around. It will be changed at the beginning of the season, and depending on miles driven, probably again in mid season. Will let you know, if you are interested.

Where do you suppose those requirements in the owner's manual come from?

The ones I have been quoting came from both the manual and were verified by Steve at BRPcare. The information in the manual (barring typos), is from the engineering departments, I hope. :roflblack: I did have an e-mail conversation with Steve and posted the information about six months ago in a previous oil thread.

We have seen this question come up many times, and I am guessing we will continue to see it on a regular basis.

We know the "rules" and a lot of people will adjust them to fit their needs. If one errs on the conservative side, that is even better--IMO--of course.

I teach Clinical Nutrition at a university. On the first day of class, I say to my students: "If you ask two nutritionists a question, you'll get at least three different answers." The same seems to be true of motorcyclists and oil.

I called BRP ... to inquire what is the correct interval for oil changes on the 2014 RT with the 1330 ACE engine because my local dealer informed me that the first oil change is due at 600 miles..... the tech at BRP said the manual that came with my 2014 is correct which states 3,000 miles... imho BRP would not recommend oil change intervals that would hurt the 1330 ACE engines.. so I for one will follow their recommendations on oil changes...
