OH NO! The dreaded "DESS ERROR".

DESS AND NO WARRANTY

Well, after nearly two years of carefree operation, I once again was hit with the 'DESS' error! Had my 2014 RTS trailered to my nearest dealer, and they have replaced the module, for the third time (2 previous times were in 2015). I haven't picked up the Spyder yet but the dealer told me they have installed the 'latest' module as instructed by BRP. Maybe three is the charm! I sure hope so. I love my Spyder, but I am becoming very concerned about riding anywhere far away from home, for fear of being left setting. By the way, my BEST warranty expires tomorrow (07/23), so this happened just in time. Now one question I would have is: If in the future I have the DESS error again, out of warranty, would my repair be covered by BRP since it has been an ongoing issue?

By the way, 'Hello' to my friends on Spyderlovers! I've not been on for quite awhile!!

#1. there are ( two ? ) members here who can dis-able the DESS module ....#2. if you can't go that route think about doing what I did .... I moved the MODULE from behind the FRUNK and bolted it under the right side headlight...... NO wires needed to be cut , the harness is long enough to go under the headlight ..... But you MUST remove the FRUNK to get to it .... once you move the Module .... you can actually connect a new module , without tools , in the dark and with your eyes closed ...... Mike

I hope it works out for you!!!
But as I stated in an early post back when the DESS became an issue on the 2014 the ONLY WAY to ENSURE a fix is to have BOTH replaced.
In the end it it costing EVERYONE more time and $$$ by BRP doing a half assed fix.
They DO NOT know nor have they isolated the problem.

Good Luck!

AJ

I just had my 2nd DESS module installed on the 18th of July. My dealer said that they too installed the latest and "Greatest" DESS MODULE that BRP said to use. Since I am 3 hours away from my dealer they also chose to give me a new key, had it cut and reprogrammed. They told me it was going over and beyond what they should have done but due to my distance that is what they chose to do. They told me at the time, that the BUDS had reported a key failure to be read or recognized by the DESS Module. So they believe that one of my keys was defective probably from the day I bought the 2015 RT. They also told me that the 2015 RT model is notorious for DESS Module issues. (Dealer stated) In fact they had already replaced 3 of them before I had gotten there with mine.

Like I said this is the 2nd time on this bike and this bike only has 1500 miles on it. They told me it is NOT because I have the bike on a Tender all the time nor is it due to the silicone key holder I have on my BRP KEY. So hope and pray they are right on cause I sure don't want to get "STUCK" and I can't get to TEXAS to deactivate the system, which according to my dealer would VOID the warranty.

Thankfully I am in month 18 out of my 24 month original warranty- then got an extended warranty coming into affect AFTER the original warranty expires. Glad they covered it all though.

One more item- they told me that if it does happen again then we will go to replacing the Ignition switch, trunk lock and trailer lock. They said that would be the last resort as it is expensive and they'd have to have the bike for a longer period of time as it is is quite labor intensive to replace those items.

That is my experience so far! Good luck to you! ;)

I too had 4 DESS failures and each time had the latest and greatest module...The last time they replaced the module the also did the keys and Ign. swithch...So far so good...But time will tell...larryd
Good luck, The latest dess module part # is 710004916. Keep us posted. Deanna

I hope it works too and agree with you wholeheartedly that it is costing people time and $$$ to do this in "Steps" instead of just finding a fix and telling dealers what has to be done. It shouldn't be this difficult but apparently it is. I mean warranty work is what it is and I understand why a dealer or BRP only wants to do things in steps but when a customer has to travel 3 hours etc., to get work done seems to me then that it all should be done and allow the customer to get on with life. This piece mealing it is really sad. By now BRP should have figured out what is causing this and either build a better less sensitive unit or something. Surely there are other things in this world that uses, DESS in their products. You don't hear them having issues. It's only Spyders. My unit only has 1500 miles on it and has now had 2 DESS modules put in and the first one they replaced was the "NEWER" module with the better part number but it too has failed and they claim it was a bad key chip. So we will see. Thanks for your comments too. Greatly appreciated!

This is the real kicker .... BRP had a DESS Module in all the other Spyders that worked 99.99% of the time ( pre 13 )........so in 2014 some engineer at BRP decided that since there was NO problem, It must be fixed :gaah:.... well now we have DESS problems up the Wazoo and BRP hasn't figured out why !!!!!! ...... Sometimes it's better to leave things that work alone ....... jmho .... Mike

My dealer just replaced my module with the newest one (710004916).

Last chance BRP!!!! You have a great machine in the Spyder, but these continuing errors and issues will erode both your goodwill, and the confidence of current owners, and prospective new buyers. Please protect your business, and your customers by fixing this and other problems with a final solution. Thank you!!

WOW- you'd think they'd fix it asap then!

What a shock to read this post Mike! I so agree with you. I see this same kind of thinking all the time in the public education system. Someone is always trying to re-invent things. Which often backfires. I agree, if it works well leave it alone. So this problem hit the skids in 2014- and is still carried in the 2015 Model. Maybe some actuary within BRP will look at the warranty claims etc., and see that this is costing them money let alone potential sales, and so forth. Reading this I am disheartened but I really hope my issue is fixed cause I really do not want to drive another 3 hours back and to let them have it for a day to replace the ignition-trunk locks. WOW! Thank you Mike! Very enlightening! :sour:

LEEB,

I have a 2014RTS-SE6 and I have had the D.E.S.S. module replaced twice( part # 710004190 July 14,2015, Aug. 28,2015)and the switch ( part # 710004413) replaced once( Aug. 28th, 2015) they also reprogramed/reshaped the keys, got a new trailer lock, a new trunk lock. Since then I have not had the D.E.S.S. error. My current spyder mileage is 19,300 miles. I know the B.E.S.T warranty covers the D.E.S.S. module,( I asked my dealership).

I can not answer the question, someone else should chime-in..
