Lasted about two weeks without the feel of wind in my face after selling the Spyders.
We are out of the Spyder business but while browsing around the other day I found this little gem just being traded in on an SUV. Seems the lady who owned it got it for her birthday 8 year's ago but didn't really like it much. This year, her daughter had a baby and since grandma couldn't fit daughter and grand baby into the Solstice she traded it on something more practical for her.
Just 25,000 miles on the clock and most of the parts in the Solstice came out of the GM parts bin so it is still easy to service. The all aluminum DOHC engine is still being used in the small Cadillacs and Buicks and since the car is reasonably light the five speed gearbox makes good use of the power available. 0-60 time isn't terrific at 6.5 seconds but it isn't awful. The seats, gauges, dash controls, suspension & steering parts are from Corvettes, Buicks or Hummers.
It's a shame that this car and the Pontiac G8 became casualties to the GM bail out. According to Bob Lutz, GM vice chairman who was the motivating force behind both the G8 and the Solstice the Feds insisted the 53 million bail out money be dependent on just having Chevrolet and Cadillac remaining after the bankruptcy. When Lutz pointed out the incredible volume of sales that Buick did in China and that killing it would upset the balance of trade, they left that one alone. They wanted to kill GMC as well but changed their mind when they saw the profit margins on those products. So that left Pontiac to get the axe even though they had some great products in the pipeline.
