NOT ANOTHER GAS MILEAGE THREAD

My Rt is great in many areas however I can not figure out why my gas mileage ranges from 19MPG-40MPG.

I drive conservatively and have 3000 miles on the RT. My last tank was a whopping 19MPG-my worst. The one before that was over 30?

Perhaps I am not filling it al the way sometimes, but when I try to fil it al lthe way it tends to overflow.

Has anyone else ever gotten less than 20MPG?
Our Audi gets better gas mileage.

...just a guess here 'casue I'm not seeing you pump the fuel... are you being consistent with when you stop pumping each time you fill up? I've found a relatively small variation... about 31.5 to 37 mpg. Most of the time it settles in around 33.5...

(Your Audi doesn't bring as many smiles to your face; does it??):D

Because of inaccuracies in filling the tank I wouldn't rely too heavily on gas mileage for a single tank. You'll get much more reliable results taking an average of 4-5 or more tanks.

The biggest variations I've had are based upon the speeds driven. Above about 65 it seems to drop off quickly (I have an RT) and below about 55 it gets better and better.

We track most of our fillups on fuelly. And yes, we get a wide range of mpg, probably due to who's riding and who's filling up.

The RS mileage dropped after the clutch & DPS were replaced . . . probably because it's soooooo much more fun to drive now!

I try to fill consistantly now---stopping as soon as the fuel starts spitting out of the vent holes with the nozzle just barely inside the fill hole. I bump it up to the next 5C and that is it. I found by overfilling I get the overflow in the evap canister and have to smell the fumes for miles.
Since I cut the windshield to 2011 specs. and cut 1" off of the side deflectors I am getting better mileage. Maybe it is just getting broke in too. I am now averaging 28.6mpg Up from 27 before the windshield cut.
I don't do a lot of freeway driving, but I nail it in town at just about every stop light. It is just to much fun not to.
Have fun and ryde safe C-YA RL

Mileage is not what is advertised by BRP. At least not for me. Highest I've ever gotten is 29. It usually runs around 27 with a very sad lowest of 19. I am consistant on filling up. I don't get on it anymore from a stop, not since the Federales stopped me. I mean after all, 0-60 in just under 4 seconds is a blast. :2thumbs: :lecturef_smilie: But Sheriff Roscoe P. Coletrain doesn't agree.

Before DPS/Clutch my average was 25.6 mpg. After, it's dropped to 21.7. Don't think it's my touch. But the best method that I've found is to average all the fill-ups and see where each tank falls. If it's well below the average, something may be wrong.

I agree

I agree with you all about the "smile factor," and I do tell everyone who asks about the gas mileage and then says thats awful and my motorcycle does better and so on, that I do not ride it to get high gas mileage.

It would be nice to have a longer range since the engine is not huge. The weight drag and all of that factor in, but I still can not fathom why the wide variation, and how I can increase the miles

My overall mileage wince July is over 30 mpg but I think I forgot to log one fill-up since I have a 44 mpg entry on the mileage tracker program I have on my iphone.

By the way, this a terrific group full of support and useful information.

I have been tracking my fuel mileage since new. I always fill it till it starts doing the spitting thing . Now have 5200 miles on the RT. Mileage started out around 27 miles per gallon.
At around the 3000 mile mark was getting 30 miles per gallon. Now at the 5000 mark I am seeing around 33 miles per gallon.
I am happy with these numbers.

So the motor is still loosening up at 5000 miles? With 3200 miles on mine I'm getting right around 33mpg now... but now I'm looking forward to seeing if it'll rise a bit over the next several thousand miles...

Bob,
I don't think the motor is still loosing up. I relate it more to me learning where the motor likes to run.

Is yours a semi-auto? I have a SM5 and I was getting around 22 to 25 mpg when I bought it. I'm at 10,000 miles now and I'm getting closer to 30 mpg. I do enjoy jack rabbit starts and have a tendency to drive fast but I have driven this way since day 1.

Yeah... I've got the "slush-box" tranny, and I drive it like it belongs to my Father-In-Law...
Mowerman, So where is the mill happiest??

Bob,
What I have had good luck with is shifting right at 5000rpm's. That is where the engine really likes to run on mine.

Where do you think your spyder runs best at?

Mowerman.

Thanks for the rpm level... I've never really given it a great deal of thought... I just have always shifted low and let the motor "pull", rather than rev... I'll give it a try!

double the speed = 4 times fuel consumption ..
i am a little faster with my RT than my GS on tour - my wife allowes me to ryde around 100mls/hour on the carways here - horrible consumption ..
think they should work also on a aerodynamic package (frontfenders ?) together with the new motor ..
on the other side i plan to get an adapter to fill up my tank complete
like this from "jumper" here in the forum.. think to get in much more

How about Altonk..... he's been working on his wing, maybe a computer controlled variable wing to give downforce when needed and reduce the force when cruising along with aerodynamics to provide for more laminar flow. An extremely thorough wind tunnel study would help. Or, we could just ease off on the throttle a little :2thumbs:.
