Just returned from our trip to Whitehorse/Skagway. Here is a road advisory for BMW. The last 120 miles to the Alaska/Canadian border (from Destruction Bay on Lake Kluane to the Alaska border) has severe road damage due to frost heaves. Make sure you gas up at Destruction Bay as there are no gas or services for 108 miles. Watch your speed, and look for the frost heaves (mostly marked by orange flags). You will have to slow down to 15 to 20 mph or less on some of them in order not to bottom out. Since the road is so deserted, we would usually go to the other side of the road (when possible) to avoid the heaves. There are a couple that are as deep as a bathtub. One is outlined in white paint stripes, the other is outlined in green--avoid these at all costs. The scenery is stunning all the way from Whitehorse, so enjoy it in spite of the road damage. The area around Kluane Lake is the best scenery on that leg of the trip. We covered 1700 plus miles on our 09 RS and 10 RT. Both bikes performed flawlessly and we had no mechanical troubles of any kind. We are glad for that, since the nearest dealer or repairs was back at home in Eagle River, AK. We also took a side trip down the Klondike Highway to Skagway from Whitehorse. This route followed one of the routes the gold rush miners took. Stunning scenery all the way. Im sure you are enjoying all the interesting people and the attention that the Spyder generates.
