Went to get the SM5 out of winter storage two nights ago and it started right up. :2thumbs:
When I was backing it out of the garage and noticed that the mud flap lights weren't flashing when in reverse? (I have the Street Magic TIPS unit so these should also flash when in reverse) I then tried my turn signals nothing too? Yet the 4 way flashers worked fine? :dontknow:
It is then I noticed my dash display was totally dark and nothing was working. No tach, no speedo, no lights, NOTHING AT ALL! It was just like the Spyder was off?
I thought to myself that's strange? I thought "did I leave my dash unplugged," but remembered I rode last fall just before I put it up and had not taken it apart since then, so that was not it. I took out the dash just to be sure, and nothing amiss there?
I then went to the relay box checked all the relays were pushed down tight, and they were?
I started it again and this time I tapped on the main relay. Ta Da! The dash then came on! But now it had the "VSS light" on!!! :yikes:
Turned the bike off, restarted it once more. Now no "VSS light", but no dash again!
Tapped the relay again, dash came back no "VSS light." But this time the "check engine" light was on! :gaah:
Turned bike off, I removed the relay pinched the pins a bit closer together and reinstalled the relay. I restarted the bike, everything was normal.
Thought to myself "OK maybe bad connections at the pins." I tried it several more times, everything was OK so I wrote it off to that. :dontknow:
Went out to garage last night just for laughs and giggles and tried the Spyder, NO DASH again. :gaah::gaah:
I tapped on the main relay and it once again came on. So, today I am going to get a replacement from my dealer.
While I was at the dealer getting some RT parts yesterday, I told them the story of the night before. They said they have never seen this before themselves, and were surprised to hear the Spyder would still run with the dash all blacked out?
Go figure it has to be me this happens to.
After I replace the relay today, I hope this will be the last of this oddball problem. Strange part is, the bike never did this before storage and was not ridden since last fall, as well as it has been on a Xtreme charger all winter long .
I hope none of you ever have this problem. But, if you ever get the same strange no dash/no turn signal flash, maybe this info will help you out.
