No Bars (not what your thinking)

Does anyone one know exactly how much fuel is left in the tank when there are no bars left on the gauge? I had that this morning, fueled up and I got 4.986 in topped out, all bars showing on gauge. That means there was 1.614 in the tank still, if it holds 6.6. Thank you for any comments.

The problem in this issue is theoretical capacity versus actual capacity.

After many, including me, have posted many times about this I have drawn what I believe to be a reasonable conclusion.

I suspect that if you took a Spyder fuel tank and isolated it and positioned it so that you could really top it off it would hold the specified 6.6 gallons.

But, enter the real world . . . That real world does not allow you to cram every cubic inch of space in the tank with fuel. Among other things, you can only fill it until the little vents start spitting -- and there is clearly still remaining space at the top of the tank. Among other things, the designer has allowed expansion space.

Also, when you fill the tank and I fill the tank -- we are likely to get different amounts into the tank. I slow the pump down as it nears the point where I expect it to be full -- and I stop immediately when I see sputtering from the vents. Maybe you would get more (or less) in the tank than I do.

So, in conclusion, it is very difficult to put an "exact" number on the usable tank capacity. More because of our human variability than the tank.

I usually plan to fill-up about 30 miles after I get to the low-fuel light and one bar. That usually means I fill up right around when the last bar disappears. I often get a tad -- more or less -- than 5.0 gallons. Around 5.6 or so is my highest.

I always thought that because the spyder has no reserve BRP made it so that when you have no bars, there is a little over 1 gallon left in the tank.

Lamont, how does the RT compare to our RS in that regard?

Sunday I pushed it a little more than I felt comfortable about but didn't run out of gas:bowdown:.Fill up took 22.1L or 5.8 U.S. gal. I went 302.5 km or 189 miles.:yikes: I have the JB and Hindle and performance filter [Evoluzione].

My experience and calculations say you were on your last fumes!

I get 6.5 gal in at no bars ran out 1 time and got 6.8 gal in I do take my time to top it off at first click it is about 5.8 gal I can usually get near 1 gal more in after first click taking my time to top it off

I fill slowly, I know filling in hot weather there is expansion. I know filling a gas tank fast, there is fume build up. I guess, with all the different responses, there are just different levels, sea level might have something to do with it and other circumstances. When I fill, I put the nozzle all the way in, when it shuts off I lift the nozzle up and fill a little more, but I never over filled where the fuel came out. I'm always careful but usually I get all bars lit. My calculations would think there is a tad more then a gallon when there are no bars left. Thank you for the feedback. I had the Update done and I'm not real happy with my gas mileage right now. I might have to go back to my dealer, they have been great. Then I can run the numbers with them for the new RT, I love it.

There have been quite a few posts about this subject of gasoline amount in tank. And it's a very interesting subject. My conclusion...no matter what one may calculate, miscalculate, guess or brag about, when you run out of gas trying to prove a point and you are far from a gas station, you LOSE. Through my 40+ years of riding with over 400K miles, I have never run out of gas, no matter where I rode. I just use common sense and fuel up more often.
