NHTSA Update

By the time I get the fix installed, we will all know what it entails.

I do not plan on reinstalling the primary muffler before taking our spyders in. If they want the vapor canister I will hand it to them. I just DARE BRP to refuse to perform the recall because of reasonable measures already taken to make the bike safe and usable because of THEIR defective design. Until then, I'll just assume they will do the work as the recall spells out.

Comprehensive and effective. Sounds promising. Several thoughts come to mind. Dual up front radiators like the 14s providing sufficient cooling for a water cooled exhaust system? Completely rerouted and shielded exhaust?

Also remember this is not the end of the recalls. It has already been said this is for heat, it does not address the fuel vapor system and its failings from an emissions standpoint. That is still to be addressed later and effects more than 2013 RTs.

That sounds promising, I hope that once it gets to the dealers they will be able to quickly get them installed. I know our dealers are swamped now with watercraft and ATVs

An that is a horse of a different color. I bet the dealers won't be in a big hurry to do for the most part a free comprehensive fix of the 2013 RT during Jet Ski/ ATV season.

JC,

You raise some excellent points, but I don't really understand what you are referring to as the "primary muffler". (I can't find that term anywhere in the maintenance manual, but would like to know what you mean by that.) I certainly have no intention of re-installing my cat. However, re-routing at least the exhaust header for the front cylinder is almost certainly called for, as that header causes an awful lot of "seat heat" AND comes within little more than an inch or so of the fuel tank, before it turns down toward the catalytic converter, which sits directly below the fuel tank. I hope any exhaust re-routing does not eliminate continued use of the "Y" pipe that has been designed to replace the converter. I would be very upset if I they place a different converter in the exhaust line unless they make it smaller and integral to the side muffler. I'm worried, because I strongly doubt that their plan involves eliminating the cat altogether (which ironically would be an ideal partial solution).

WRT your last point, I would suspect that whatever they are doing with the 2013 RT's in this recall, will be inclusive of everything they feel is necessary to resolve the entire problem with this model. To do it piece-meal would not seem effective at all. However, there will certainly be other recalls that will deal with other models, as the NHTSA investigation essentially involves all model years of the RT and ST prior to 2014 (if not the RS as well).

I agree. Let's hope it isn't the typical scenario where the job takes 6 hours to complete but BRP only pays for 1 hour.

Rob,
I suspect that he's referring to the catalytic converter... ;)
WHEN this fix corrects the overheating situation (WHEN; not if!), I honestly believe that it wall also put an end to the unwanted fuel vapors as well.
(It's my opinion that it has also been caused by all of the heat.)

Dealers get reimbursed fully for both parts and labor when addressing a vehicles recall, or warranty issues for that matter. Dealers are perfectly happy to do warranty and recall work.

Don't be concerned.

Primary muffler is the part you are referring to as the cat and is what its called on the parts diagram. It is indeed a muffler with baffles inside that also contains the cat.

BRPCares has already stated that this recall does not address the emissions issues and that will come at a later date.

What BRP pays the dealer is between them, not me. And they will not be allowed to perform other paying work ahead of a safety recall. Any dealer caught putting new paid maintenance work ahead of an already scheduled safety recall would be in REAL trouble with BRP, the NHTSA and the state. Safety recalls are typically placed head of the line. What the work pays is the dealers problem to work with the MFg.

Bob I am having a hard time to find a dealer that even want to take my bike in trade no dealer want a 2013 it's like a plague I have talked to 6 difrent dealers found one in south NY that wants lowball me that is where I am at

You could always sell it yourself and keep the extra $ that you would make verses what a dealer will give you. That way you can dictate what the actual selling price is.

when i had my 13 and i removed the cat i was assured by steve from brp that they would not say a word about it because i was trying to get rid of a problem that they know existed

Thanks for the explanation, JC. I sort of figured that's what you meant, but I've seen a couple of other references to the "primary muffler" and I wanted to make sure that we were talking about the same thing. Interesting that BRP's parts list and maintenance manual would call it two different things. Whatever you call it, it never should have been placed right under the fuel tank. It will be interesting to see how they "fix" that.

That's why I keep saying that getting the fix done should, be the first step...
I agree with Bob. Apparently so does my dealer. He just bought 9 untitled 2013 RT's from other dealers who were either going out of business or wanted to unload their inventory.

i talk to the service guy yesterday at the dealer he said they are addressing heat in the glove box are that all he would say glad i traded mine in yesterday
