There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Newbie with a question

Hi all, although I am not new to motorcycles This is our first Spyder. When I say our it really will be my wife's. She has been wanting one for a while now and ran across a deal on ebay for a new 2011 RT with only one mile on it. The problem is it is in Idaho. Got it for 16689.00 which makes it worth going and getting it. I am no stranger to touring but this will be my wife's first trip. My question is about the 600 mile service. will this void my warranty if i don't get this done until we arrive back in Savannah? it will be a 2100 mile trip.I cant seem to find a dealership until we get around 1000miles out and will be out of our way heading back but if I have to I can go there if it means keeping the warranty in tack. I can change the oil myself at one of the hotels we will be staying at if the dealership has the filters in stock that would be my biggest concern.also what oil do you recommend? I use mobile one in my BMW K1200lt. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I drove slightly over 300 miles to get mine. I had thought about having a friend (Plan A) drive me so I could ride mine back. Mostly because it was inconvenient for the other person, I ended up borrowing a 6 x 10 trailer (like you see lawn services use - Plan B) which worked out great. My greatest fear was being jacked around by the dealer once I got there since I did everything on the internet and once I got there would be at their mercy. Everything worked out fine. They tied it down and I got home that evening after a 12 and half day (left at 6:30 a.m. and got back at 7 p.m.) Except for a short ride at the dealership and a short ride that first evening, my first real ride came the next day. About 2 hours into a very short trip, here and there, I went into LIMP mode. Freaked me, but the local dealer said bring it right over (which was great of them) and they replaced the rear passenger seat sensor on the spot after diagnosing the problem.

After the fact, I was super-happy I had not used plan A. Limp mode is great to protect your bike but sucks when you are far away from your destination.

Except for that hiccup, no problems and I now have 1,500 miles on mine. Did the 600 mile service at 710 since the local dealer is very busy with spring sales of motorcycles and jet skis. The daily rental on a trailer would have been $47/day. Someone from my church let me borrow theirs.

I did save around $4,000 on a 2012 RT-S SM5 so it was worth the day but glad I trailered mine back.

I also went on BRP's website and used a website called POIEDITOR.COM to create my own POINTS OF INTEREST (POI) that included all the Ohio, Michigan & West Virgina Can-Am dealers. Got the addresses from BRP and used the POI website to create it. I have that POI uploaded to my Spyder GPS.

2012-05-23 15.31.22 (800x591).jpgDon't know what your route is but there is a dealer in Bozeman MT, think its called power pro sports or something akin. Also a good one in Billings, MT. Been there. Nice People. I would use what the dealer sells and what Can Am recommends on first oil change. You can look at changing brands later. If you're not familiar with RT oil change proceedure, I would let the dealer do it. Just saying....;)

:welcome: Although you can stretch the first service interval without too much trouble, say to 1,000-1,200 miles or so, I would not go 2,100 miles without your dealer's approval. When you purchase a Spyder your warranty is contingent on performing the 600 mile service. It is important, not only to dot the I's and cross the T's, but to check BUDS for updates and issues, retension the drive belt, clean the oil tank screen, etc. You want these things done to prevent trouble on the remainder of your trip. I'd either arrange for the service at a dealer along the way, have the Spyder shipped, or bring it home on a trailer. If you do ride it home, you should check the tire pressures and suspension settings before you hit the road. The factory settings aren't suitable for some riders. Check the oil, brake fluid, and coolant levels, too. The dealers don't always check up front. Be aware that the oil level checking procedure is peculiar to the Spyder.

Mobil1 now carries an API SM rating, which is prohibited by BRP, even though the Mobil1 says their oil is suitable for wet clutches. There have not been any reliable reports about it either way, here. No matter what you use down the road, I'd recommend staying with the factory recommendation at least until the 3K oil change. JMHO

NEWBIE TOBE

Welcome Aboard, when you get aboard.....and good luck with the transporting thing.....Mike...    :agree:

My vote would be for the trailer under these circumstances. Old to m/c, new to Spyder. I had a few learning times along the way, when I went from two to three.

I bought mine in NH, and had it shipped to OR - was about $1000, as I recall. Arrived ready to ride.

Otherwise, plan your trip to assure you are at a dealer willing to do the service (call first) on your 2nd day out - Shouldn't be a problem. That would put you around Denver, and I'm sure there would be a dealer there.

:congrats: on what seems to be a pretty sweet deal! :ohyea::yes: Welcome to the family! :2thumbs:
Can I borrow the car now?? :roflblack:

Ok I have found a dealership in Rapid city South Dakota about little over 600 miles from where I will be picking the RT up. Just down the road is mount Rushmore and the badlands so looks like we can hop over there (providing they can squeeze us in) and do a little sight seeing. I really do not like the idea of trailer a touring bike that is made for just that. I do have several other places to check out if they can't get us in thanks to Knarfoh. I checked the BRP website and there are several with in the needed miles. This is why I joined your forum for the wealth of information and knowledge. I hope to post pictures of the bike and the trip and let everyone know where we are. I have read about the limp mode hopefully that is few and far between but still a worry of mine thanks for all the replies and welcomes.

I stopped in at that dealer near Mt. Rushmore two years ago and they were super nice people.

 I don't blame you for not wanting to trailer a touring machine. It would stick in my craw, too.

:welcome: and :congrats:on your new ryde. It sounds like you have it figured out. Please post pictures of your journey. You are in for some beautiful scenery in the Black Hills area. If you continue east about 60 miles--make sure you hit Wall SD and take the Badlands National Park loop.

Similar issue.

Similar issue for me later this summer. I have a 6K+ trip scheduled from Knoxville to Yellowstone in late July. If anyone has a recommendation for a dealer in the Montana / Wyoming region where I could get my oil change while I’m out there I would aspirate it.

Thanks,

Ed

I was in the same situation as you but I found a dealer at about 700 miles. That said, I did change my mind and had the bike shipped. I used Wolverine Transport and had a good experience. They were very reasonable. I really wanted to get to know the bike and how to ride safely and comfortably before taking on a long trip. I was also concerned about the problems I read about. I have about 1300 miles under my belt and love it but am quite glad I shipped it. If the deal you got was great, maybe investing in the shipping may be the better choice. Don't jeopardize the warranty by stretching the breakin period too far.

Just my views
