Newbie needs advice.

Like many, I have been reading your web site for several months, while shopping for a Spyder. Finally, found one that was in my price range and met my requirements. Will be picking it up Friday from a CAR dealership, 2012 RSS SE Neutron Green, Hindle exhaust, HID head & fog lights, tank bag, 2600 miles. I would appreciate advise what I need to do, since dealership does not handle bikes let alone Spyders, I have checked with a Spyder dealer and it has warranty until April 2014, and it has had two warranty items, headlight, and ignition switch. I have read the Do's and Do Nots for newbies, and it was very informative. But, I have not ridden in 25 years, am BIG Guy, 6'2" and 400 lbs, with bad knees. Should I get extended warranty & which kind? Do I need to do oil change, etc. right now because can not get info from original owner? Not sure if 600 miles service was done. What to look out for? Looking for good dealer to do extra work, I live about in between Evansville, In, Paducah, KY, and Nashville, IL dealerships. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Glad you joined with us. Auto dealers are not the best choice but if the bike was cared for it should be fine. I would get her in for at least an oil change and have them go over the bike thoroughly. (brakes, check codes, re-call(s) done if any, tires and belt tension to name a few) Maybe check with a few dealers and get some pricing beforehand. For myself, I would check pricing on warranties but most likely would just keep the existing one. We had a 2011 RS that was perfect. Be safe and enjoy!

You might try giving the VIN to one of your local dealers and asking them to run it to see what has been serviced on it. You say you are a big guy with bad knees so have you ever ridden an RS? You may want to do some mods to make it a little more comfortable for a big guy.

The RS is not going to be a "comfort" ryde if you are a big guy with bad knees. Recommend a thourough test ryde to see if that is going to fit for you. Advice about checking it out with the :spyder2: dealer is also wise, to make sure you did not find a "problem" :ani29:.

IMO: an RT is probably going to suit your size and needs a little better. Recently rented an RS because that was all that was available. Since I have been on RT's since 2010--the stock RS almost killed me and my back. I had to get off and stretch about every half hour.

I also believe an extended warranty is good if you make the purchase. Get a Spyder warranty and not an add-on from the car dealer.

Im new too the Spyder Family only had it few months and new too this forum, I bought a 2008 GS and was not happy with the riding position. Dont know enough about the newer ones or the model your looking at, but if its anything like mine your size may be a factor. I say that with respect my friend, Im 6 foot 220ish and would say my knees arent great either. I spent bunch of $$ but its way better now. I put 300km(180miles) on today just cruizing and waaaaaaay bettter being able to move legs around... Doug

The dealership in Nashville, Illinois has a couple of techs dedicated to Spyders. They should be able to help you out. That's where I take mine. I'm about 60+ miles away, one-way, from them taking the back roads, but it's a very nice ride!

Being a RSS rider i would half to agree with this , RSS being more of a sport bike your more leaning towards the front and a lot of pressure on your knees. Your spyder decision is great but you may wanna rethink the model . RT's are more like a cruiser and more relaxed riding position.

Like many others I didn't like the sport bike positioning on the RS. not great for older backs and knees. I bought the KEWL metal handle bar mount / console, a set of pull back bars 6" up 6" back . Only had to have a new clutch hose made by a local metric machine shop. also had the seat re-sculpted and added a taller wind shield from CALSCI. whole different ride. Also had the laser alignment done by ROLO (Norm and Mike) while at NY Spyderquest . I also added a rear tail box to supplement the frunk .....
