There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Newbie Intro/A Few Questions

First off I am a new Spyder owner, an 09 Phantom and I must say it's an interesting ride. It's going to take some getting used to the differences between it and a regular motorcycle. I've been riding for 31 years, and just sold a 2007 GoldWing, due to the weight and knees that no longer liked catching that weight at red lights.

I have a few questions about some modifications, looking for some parts recommendations.

I am thinking about the BRP tank bag, as it can keep some things (wallet, phone, gate & garage door openers) handier than the trunk. Is it a good piece, and has anyone seen one on a Phantom to see how it looks with the grey sides on the black bike?

I would like a bit taller windshield, nothing big but a bit more wind deflection. I love the look of the original screen, any recommendations for a dark smoke screen that offers a bit more wind protection than the stock one?

I see two pipe offerings; Hindle & Two Brothers. Neither will add an appreciable amount of power, so I just want to compare sound. I want the best sound without being obnoxiously loud. From what I see the Hindle seems to be more popular here?

I normally do my own minor service, but the dealer (of course) told me that the maintenance on the Spyder can't be done at home because the belt tension requires a sonic tester. They get $250 for each service, except for the 12,000 miles service which is $1400! Is this right? I hate paying someone to do what I can do, but I also don't want to lose my warranty due to failing to perform maintenance. There is precious little maintenance information in the owners manual.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Welcome John.
I just ordered the tank bag to use on my Phantom. They look good on the black machines. I am running the 2Bros dual carbon pipe set-up, which is almost too loud.
I am in the learning stages too, coming from bikes over the last 30 years. Its getting better, plus I love stopping at lights and relaxing without holding any weight up..LOL

I also ordered the sport/touring windshield, a Can-am product which I have ridden with and it gives some pretty good protection over the stock one.
As far as maintenance goes, I let my dealer do mine since it was the 600 mile one and I will stay with them for warranty purposes.

Hey, John welcome.

Regarding a windshield, if you search on this message board, you will see that people are quite impressed with the protection and adjustability of the CHAD.

Even though I love the CHAD, I would be happy to trade mine to you for your 427 Cobra....:joke:

:congrats: and welcome

I love my Hindle and as far as windshield goes, you will find as many opinnions as there are members here!

:congrats:welcome Get a Service Manual, it sounds like your dealer is planning on early retirement. Ryde safe.

john

welcome:congrats: get a service manual as was stated, and the Lamonster is correct all other that does not require the BUDS..Check around for different dealers. Their prices might give you a great supprise. As to the service manual check other threads on this board as there are links to that precious manual that doesn't cost you an arm, leg and half of texas.

:agree:I will up the offer and send you a new one in box welcome:congrats:

$250 is high (more than double) what most places charge for the average service / oil change and $1400 for the 12,000 mile service is just nuts. :yikes: For that price, you can buy the Best Plus 3 year extended warranty which includes a yearly service. If you happen to put 12,000 miles on the Spyder in a year, then the warranty would cover that service and I can almost guarantee the dealer will not be getting reimbursed $1400 to do that work. I've changed my own oil on all but two occasions (600 mile and 12,000 mile service) and my Spyder has basically ran trouble free for 14 months and 15,000 miles.

I would shop around for another dealer to work with as this one seems like they want to take you for a ride. :sour:

welcome Congrats on a new addiction. . . .oops, I mean addition!!! Either way, you'll love it!!! Bumb knees and hips here. I absolutely love that I do not have to put my feet down at stops!! Got used to that factor VERY quickly!!!

Enjoy the ryde!!!

Welcome John
I have the same leg problems and after 41 years was getting tired of holding up an 850 pound Harley. Forget the Gold Wing I could not even reach the ground. It took me a while to get used to the Spyder but I loved it from the start. Never having to put you feet down, not having to look for the right grade when parking, having reverse is a great addition. Windshields are very personal, if you tried the the taller BRP and liked it then go for it. You might keep a close eye on the 4 sale section. A lot of people go through quite a few windshields before getting one they like and the rest end up there. I have a shop manual and what you need is there to do most of the maintenance. I plan on only using the dealer with what I can not do. There seems to be a great difference in dealers so shop around if you are blessed to have some other shops in your area. I am not so the choice is them or myself.
