• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

New York is Trike Unfriendly

The tolls for trikes are more than double for a tire than that of a car or motorcycle. For example, trikes pay $23.50 R/T on the Tappan Zee (peak) versus $9.50 for cars.

I would leave New York in a heartbeat if I was offered a job elsewhere. I don't live in New York City. But, I have to pay a New York City income tax thanks to Cuomo and Blumberg!

Update 2/26/16:
I got a call from the NY Thruway Authority today. The person said he agrees with me totally. He has no idea where that classification came from. They will change it in the next few days. A motorcycle should be charged the same whether it is 2 or three wheels. Anyone who was overcharged will get a refund.

Did you ask "Why"? :dontknow:
Perhaps if enough folks point out this inequity; it will change...

Ask who why? the NY DMV will barely give you the time of day. They make everything as difficult as it possibly can be. The only answer I would get after wasting hours and hours of time is "that is the law."

TOLLS

On roads considered Inter or Intra -State I thought the tolls were based on weight and number of axels / wheels...................Mike

If it's not worth the effort to find an answer; then what do you want us to do about it?
You could at least call your elected representatives, and see if they're willing to look into it...

Yikes...!!

Come to southern CA where we have two (2) toll roads and they are optional....:roflblack: Gps always sends you there but we all keep going...

I was stationed at the USMC base in San Diego in 1969. It is a great place to ride, etc.

Hmmmm not my experience

I traveled a lot of NY a couple years ago on my Spyder and never paid those kinds of tolls....mostly avoided toll roads whenever I could...heck I was even downtown Manhattan...I just made road choices that didn't require tolls. I did learn to have a roll of quarters handy....

No mistake. A Trike is considered a 3L vehicle.

John

Someone is giving you bad information. Their own diagram of how axles are counted shows you as a 2 axle vehicle. You are 2L according to the documentation posted. There is no way you're 3L. Cars have 4 axle spindles so with that reasoning they should be 4L not 2L.

This is a problem that has existed for years. I ride a motorcycle with a sidecar and have encountered the same situation. The toll taker was/is mistaken, trikes and sidecars are two axle vehicles. When/if this happens again, get a receipt and the toll takers name or other identification, then write a polite letter to the toll collection authority, not the BMV. You have been over charged and are due a refund. It may take a while and even ore that one letter back and forth, but it is worth it unless you just want to give your money away.

This really sounds more like a toll-Booth Monkey that needs more training; rather than an unfriendly State...
