New understanding of the term 'butt hurt'

I purchased my spyder Friday. Road 30 miles that day, road 240 on Saturday, and 50 yesterday. Since I work in DC and live in Knoxville I decided I'd ride up there today. I've got a little over 2 hours left and my gluteus maximus is screaming at me. Last time my butt hurt this bad was shortly after I cut off one of my sisters pig-tails and my grandmother made me go cut a switch...

I am loving it though! Started out and would barely reach 50 on a straightway... Today I've been cruising down the interstate at a nice 75...

Get a "AIRHAWK" "R" Cushion, your butt will love you for it.:thumbup::thumbup:

You could purchase another seat, but I would suggest trying an Airhawk cushion first. If it works for you, you will have saved a ton of $$$$.

had an Ultimate Seat Tall Boy on our 13 RT. on the 15 RT I really wanted to like the stock seat because of the BRP backrest. It's just so much larger of a backrest than the Ultimate. the stock seat was much firmer than my stock 13 seat was.

so we just rolled over 2k miles in less than 30 days and I will say that having the Airhawk really helped out plus I had added the Revco Hwy Pegs and they really helped being able to stretch out my legs while riding.

overall I am pretty happy with the stock seat plus I saved myself nearly $1300. do yourself a favor and at least try the Airhawk before jumping ship. plus your butt will get used to doing some miles the more you do it.

Love the avatar.. It is amazing how many people do not know who he is. He rode the rack of the RT for several thousand miles.

Bought the large size gel pad from Cycle Gear the other day - on sale at not quite 1/2 off. Love it - very comfy on the rump.

Some other riding friends recommended bicycle shorts under my jeans. I'm going to try those out

Didn't Russell Crow play Gluteus Maximus?

I just returned from a 1800 mile ride (900 each way). The first 200 miles it was not bad but after that I found I was hurtin about every 50 miles or so. I tried my air hawk and my gel but no change. I just finally stopped about every 50-60 miles for a quick walk which made the next 50-60 tolerable. I have a total of 45000 miles undermy belt between my 2011 and my 2014 and this is about as good as it gets. I have not tried sheep skin so no experince to share their.

The one thing I do appreciate about our saddles is that I do not have the tail bone pain that I suffered with when riding 2 wheels. That would get so bad I had to take super strenght pain killers to get through the day.

On hot rides I use Gold Bond medicated power and it is amazing for preventing or fixing chaff. I got a rash on my inner thigh on the way back and was really hurting. I took a rest stop break and applied the Goldbond liberally. At first I though "that was a mistake" as it burned like hell but in a minute or so it passed and then the remainder of that day the ride was comfortable.

I think it Depends...

... Greatly on how well your posture is; muscle structure in your back and butt; and finally vertebrae and disc alignment. I'm a firm believer that your core has to be strong enough to support your upper body from the slight/subtle twisting and bouncing experienced on the ryde. I have lower back problems stemming from bulging and degenerative discs... Always thought of myself as strong and in good physical shape, until I had my first back issue and it humbled me quickly. I've had issues with butt soreness and pain even when riding in a car for a couple of hours and now more so on the spyder. I too have a Airhawk cushion but tend to stop every hour to stand up and walk around... It's the only way I can make it on long triop. I do find that if I suck my belly button towards my spine (tighten those muscles, pretending that I'm going to get punched in the stomach), it forces me to sit more upright which helps the posture, which helps the spine alignment, which helps reduce the soreness and achy butt sensation. Sure, moving around in the seat, changing angles, positions, stretching legs, etc helps, but sometimes I think some bodies just aren't made for the long rides... I'm convinced no matter what pad, or seat I have on that spyder, my back and butt will not be happy after an hour or two.

Just my opinion on this matter.... But I agree that an Airhawk is a good starting option.

My stock seat was good for less than an hour before I get really uncomfortable . . . I added a gel pad and a sheepskin . . . added perhaps 30 minutes or less. My Air Hawk R made all the difference . . . I can ride until I have to stop or run out of gas, now . . .

Wow you work in DC and ride/drive to TN, impressive. I thought I complain when I ride from Alexandria to my work at the Pentagon. :yikes:
