• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. New To Forum -- Many questions

We are in the process of looking at a 2014 Spyder RT

Couple of questions as we start our journey

1) since we live in a high heat area -- are they prone to heat problems?
2) is a belt guard a good idea?
3) road hazard warranty for tires and wheels?
4) if we get the can am soon, it will have a 3 year warranty -- should I look at a longer one?

I know I will have more questions --

anything else I should be aware of?

Couple of questions as we start our journey

1) since we live in a high heat area -- are they prone to heat problems?
2) is a belt guard a good idea?
3) how about the extended warranty for tires and wheels -- is it a problem with damage?

You call that many questions!? You should see all the question threads I've been posting over the last few weeks as I'm a new Spyder owner too haha!!

1...they do run hot, some models more so than others....will let 14 RT owners comment
2...not necessary unless you travel unavoidable gravel roads regularly, from what I've read. But they arent a bad idea at all, can only help.
3...I opted out of the extended warranty for tires and wheels. Was not worth the price IMO. I did elect the 5 year bumper to bumper though.

This forum is amazing and has helped me so much, keep your questions coming!

I can speak to the heat issue.

I had a 2008 and it often INDICATED that it was running hot by the bars on the dash, but it never overheated and never went into limp mode and I live in San Antonio where it gets pretty hot. Nothing like sitting at a long light in the Texas summer.

I have a 2014 RT-S and love it. Even though BRP designed all the Spyders and did testing in Florida in the summer, they listened to real world customers and figured out that a big engine wrapped up in plastic tupperware can allow a heat build up. The new 2014s have two radiators vice one and they are in front of the front wheels with lots of air rushing through them. They also have a special mode where if you're sitting in traffic the fans blow forward away from you. We haven't had any really bad 110 degree days yet this year but certainly 100 degrees and long traffic lights and the analog temperature gauge just sat there and didn't move.

Much better heat management built in. Search the forums here for heat management and you'll see other folks have swapped exhausts, wrapped exhausts, added vents, removed plastic etc. Bottom line is heat is not an issue. Good luck

Your dealer

Just make sure you have a reliable dealership to handle your servicing and repairs. A quick search on this forum will show you that some dealerships have bad reputations for good reasons. Other riders, myself included, will drive over 100 miles each direction to by pass some dealerships to get to "good" ones.

Find and join a Spyder group near you here or on Facebook. Those groups can answer a lot of the local questions about dealerships & servicing available in your area. Its a great way to find riding groups and share ideas too.

hope you find your perfect Spyder soon!:D

The 2014 RTs do NOT suffer from any heat-related issues! :2thumbs:
I've never needed a belt guard on either of mine; but there are LOTS of folks here who love them; it'll have to depend on the road condtions that you're mnost likely to encounter...
Extended Warranty?? Yup!
After all; what is, "peace of mind" worth to you? :D

My opinion:
Extended warranty: good idea.
Extra Warranty for tires: bad idea.
Heat Issues on my 2012 RT: Solved by boots and Spyderpops block off plate. I live in the Southern California Desert area (Redlands)
Belt Guard: I don't know anyone who has one. Good idea or bad idea--I do no know.

The previous posters have pretty much answered the questions.

I have a question though--an extended warranty on tires? I did not know such a thing existed. I must have missed that.

I always thought that tires were a wear item. :dontknow: UNLESS road hazard tire insurance is what is being discussed.

Yes it is a road hazard warranty --

if we get the bike in a short period of time, it will have a 3 year warranty --

no concerns with the 2014 RT's

Bigger engine. More H.P. and torque.
6 speed trans as opposed to previous 5 speeds
good heat management. Heat is no longer an issue.
Better gas mileage

I love my 2010 RT S and have it set up perfect for me but I think I will trade up for a '15 by the end of this year for the reasons mentioned above. I do longer touring trips and pull the 622 trailer. I am sure the new 1330 engine is perfect for the way I ride.

First of all :welcome:and :congrats: on the 14'RT. :nopic: of your new 14'RT. And let the fun and memory's begin.
Definitely, get the B.E.S.T. Warranty ( extended Warranty). Deanna777

What sort of fuel mileage do you get when towing?
I've seen some "Scary-Good" numbers being reported by the 1330/622 combinations!
