I don't understand why people get bent out of shape when someone comments on the low mileage that our Spyders get. The fact is the mileage sucks, end of story. I still enjoy riding and hope to continue to.

:agree: The engine itself can be a fuel saver, but as Scotty (Nancystoy) has stated, the :spyder2: has the aerodynamics of a barn yard with wheels and the doors opened.:roflblack:

If you want/need/desire to save fuel, buy a Vespa.

Fifth gear, in my Spyder anyway, is barely legal whether or not I'm ryding 2 up or not.

I give up! ..... I don't think it is wrong to want to improve a good thing.

but let's face it, if you feel you can afford a $25K+ for a toy (which most are, not all but most) it seems a bit irrational to complain about the fuel economy.

JMHi said that very same thing not long ago and several folks got ALL bent out of shape:roflblack: even though it's true, for the majority of us. however, i DO realize that there are folks here that ryde full time and lots more than average.:gaah:

another overlooked factoid is the spyder idles rather high, which also contributes to fuel usage. ( think about how much time you spend sitting at red lights per tankfull ):banghead:

I believe it is the EPA. It is usually done to get idle emissions within their limits.

This is why you plan routes to use as many right turns as possible. Don't have to stop and idle for as long. I know ups does this and it saved them hundreds of thousands of dollars in gas in Vegas alone over one year.

Personally I think this is where some confusion lays. Some interpret the fact that they can't tour as far as say a Goldwing to mean fuel economy must be horrible. Actually although it is not anything to write home about they actually wish it had a larger capacity........at least I do anyway?:thumbup:

The fuel cost of running a Spyder is the cheapest part of the total operating costs. I owned a boat before I bought into Spyders and it got 1/2 mpg. Beat that pickup truck owners. Funny enough the fuel was the cheapest part of that deal too.

The range gets to be a bit of a problem especially out west where it can be 75 miles between fuel stations. Other than that I like getting off of the bike every couple of hours to get some fuel and stretch my legs.

At this point I would not give up any horses for more MPG.

They just did that for this year; the new front suspension parts...

We all enjoy the changes BRP makes each year to the Spyder. Many, if not most of those changes likely results from customer feedback. I believe it makes perfect sense to make your thoughts and concerns known about what you think should be changed on the Spyder.

BRP chose the engine design for the Spyder & I believe they could have made a better choice. I also own & ride a GL1800A Goldwing two wheeler. It averages about 10 MPG better than my Spyder. It turns about 3000 RPM @ 70 MPH while the Spyder turns about 5100 RPM. I have the choice and almost always choose the Spyder.

I generally make all my long road trips on motorcycle & have found that since my first road trip on my RT, I now pay more for fuel each day than for lodging. I also ride with family who ride a Goldwing trike (CSC) and a Harley TriGlide. The Goldwing trike, which is several hundred pounds heavier than my RT, gets an average of 8 MPG better than my RT & I think the Harley even more, but I don't recall. We ride the same miles at the same time at the same speed. The Goldwing also uses regular while I use premium. This means that in 100 miles, I am paying about $4.50 more than he pays. Over a 4k miles trip, I'm paying $180.00 more than he does for the same miles ridden.

Like it or not, BRP is competing against other tour bikes/trikes in the market. There are likely a sizable portion of the market who would give the Spyder a better look before choosing what to purchase, if the Spyder was more competitive in MPG. I think it makes perfect sense to keep this issue in front of BRP. Future buyers may benefit from our persistence.

First, there a lots of things that I think need improved on the Spyder.
The basic electronic system is, IMHO deeply flawed.
The radiator heat discharge.
The belt drive .... on and on I could go,
and when you buy a vehicle it gives you certain rights to carp.

But fuel economy for a big toy is like complaining that your King Kong toy uses too many D batteries.

Let me clarify also.

I have read comments that some feel that they would like more horsepower or that their feet get too hot or what ever. But I never felt it necessary to tell them to go buy a Vespa because I didn't agree.
