New ST Troubles with electric start / bad key

Hello All,

Just curious if anyone else has run into this odd issue.

Drove to work the other day, all was well. Leaving work, put the key in turned it. Display did not light up or anything, first assumption was that the battery is dead. Hooked up the jumper cables, etc. Power came back.

I hit the electric start button, nothing. Didn't even make a news. After trying a few more times, the display started displaying "bad key", but this only displayed a few seconds and went away. Turned it off, tried again, the electric start would still not fire up. But no bad key.

so... long story short, I got towed to coleman in falls church. As soon as they put in the key, turn the bike on, the display lights up as normal, they go to hit the starter it doesnt do anything and flashes bad key. I drive my 2nd key over, they put the key in turn it over and still the ignition will not start but the display never flashes bad key for an hour.

They have no idea what is going on and thought I'd reach out to the community for any thoughts!!!

Here's the thing..!!

there have been some issues with ignition switches. Don't know whats going on but keys are getting stuck and popping bad key codes. They should replace the switch. The chips in the key or switches are failing. For 2014 they made some key mods may be the cause...:thumbup:

Since your issue started with nothing coming on on the display until it saw some juice from jumper cables, I think i would start there.
These machines are SO sensitive to battery voltage it isn't funny.
I'd start with all the main battery and chassis ground connections, then swap out the battery with a known good one.

I'm just thinking it's going crazy seeing inconsistent voltage.

Just did a similar thing.

The first part of my story is a little different, but the outcome was the same. Bad Key, no go. Turned out it was NOT a faulty component but a bad ground somewhere in that key circuit. My dealer, Leaders Marine in Kalamazoo MI found it, fixed the bad ground and I'm good to go. Been riding it for a week since with no problems. Have your repair guy check out the bad ground issue. May fix the issue.

Root cause was determined to be the DESS module, after replacing under warranty, the spyder was able to successful start.

Thanks for letting us know the outcome. This information could be helpful for someone else. In the past the DESS module have been mostly trouble free, but it would have been changed along with the key for 2014. I hope BRP has not introduced a problem component.

Showed up at the dealer to get my spyder, sat down on the bike to crank it, same issue after the dess module was replaced. Service said it was fine the day before, they're investigating the issue as its not resolved.

BRP recommended a new battery, theyll install and let it sit overnight to see what happens!

:agree: This sounds and smells like a faulty ground connection... :gaah:
