• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

New Spyder Owner

NM Wrench

New member
Hi My wife and I are brand new owners of a 2013 Spyder ST Limited. I want to get her a backrest but the factory one costs over 600 bucks. Does anyone know where and if someone makes a backrest without having to buy a new seat too. I thought owning Harley's all my life was expensive this looks like it will trump the Motor Company! Thanks

I have a factory BRP backrest I could part with it is silver with black upholstery vinyl
I had it on my 2008 GS/RS I am not sure it will work on an ST but if it does.... I am sure
some one will come up with the correct answer I will sell it to you
give me a call or email me

Welcome.
Are you looking for just a backrest for your wife (passenger) ? If so you don't need a new seat.
You need a sports rack and a backrest from Can Am.
Think yourself lucky the same thing in New Zealand costs NZ$1300 (US$1100) now who's getting ripped off, the dealer also wanted NZ$300 (US$250) to fit. In the end I managed to fit it myself.
There are other options out there, but I believe the OEM from Can Am looks the best.

:congrats: on the new ryde. :welcome: to the site.

You might check out Utopia backrests. They are also pretty good.

Have to agree..!!

:agree: there are others. Check the sponsors here. I know there is one that flips from driver to passenger that works well on RS/RSS/GS models...

Honda Toledo East has the new fixed position backrest for $528. The adjustable backrest they're referring to is a SmoothSpyder brand. It's $470 and looks very useful. The can-am one is attractive to me because you can add the rear storage trunk to it (but that's more money again)

My wife had quite a bit of concern about flying off the back of my ST-SM5, and considering its acceleration it seemed a very valid concern. I looked into a few different back rest options and decided to go with the factory one as the others looked much less durable and not easily removable. So I bought a color matched Sport Rack on Amazon for $352.54 and got a Can-Am backrest for $260 on eBay also color matched. That's $612.54 total, which isnt cheap but cheaper than BRP's website. The cast aluminum construction of the sport rack is well made and the back rest is even beefier. I was not crazy about the plastic nut that holds the release cable in place but it seems to be doing the job well, and that's my only minor complaint about the whole setup. I love the fact that I can quickly and easily remove the back rest when I ride solo because I don't like the idea of my emergency exit point being blocked without a good reason. Installation of the sport rack took me about an hour or so. Its not extremely difficult but it does take some time. Installation of the back rest is about 10 or 15 seconds :)

I know thats not the cheaper option you were looking for, but cheaper is not always better. Some of the aftermarket options for back rests look flimsy, or have bars that look like they would dig into the passengers back, or cant be adjusted, or cant be easily removed. Some things to consider before choosing.

I'll echo what others have said. Very expensive but I am happy with it. So is the wife and that's what counts.

I was not happy about the cost of the BRP back either! But I dont think my wife would ride with me very much without it. She felt like she was going to fall off during exceleration. I am very happy with it as it is very well made and it looks good.
