• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Greetings to you all. I have been watching this site for the last 6 months researching the Spyder and finally decided to make a move. Last Saturday I purchased a new 2009 SM5 Phantom and I absolutely love it. I am very excited about the purchase and I cannot wait to start mods! I just hope we have enough days of decent weather for me to enjoy my new toy before the snow hits.

Quick question - has anyone traveled with their Spyder on a trailer? Thinking of taking the bike to Florida next month - any suggestions? How would you go about strapping this thing down?

This is how I do it. Drive it on and set parking brake. I run one strap accross just behind the trunk and around the frame being careful not to go around any wiring harness and stay away from anything sharp. Go out and forward and hook to d-rings. Then take a strap around the rear wheel, protect it with a soft cloth, and strap directly behind to a d-ring. Do not over tighten the rachet straps.
 
Spyder on Trailer

I'm afraid I have to disagree with the previous instructions for trailering. Your Operator's Guide has good instructions for tying down the Spyder. These should be followed closely to avoid possible damage. Never tie down the Spyder to anything but the wheels! I suggest using some motorcycle soft-ties (tie-down extensions) through the wheels. I pad mine with microfiber cloths. Ratchet tie-downs work better than the cam-lock variety at these shallow angles, BTW. Never use the passenger grab handles or the plastic bodywork to secure your Spyder. If you hit a good bump, these plastic parts could easily be broken, and even when padded, plastic is easily marked.
 
Thousands of miles towing this way, never an issue. I feel if you strap to the front wheels your always putting a strain on the front suspension. Scotty even though we disagree, it's good to see you back.

When I picked up my Spyder, the dealer called BRP about the tie down procedure. (neither one of us was smart enough to check the Owner's Manual) The straps through the wheels is the only way to go according to the people that make it. When I tie mine down, I try to get a straight forward and back configuation with as little side stress as possible on the steering.

This is good also. Three straps, all pulling straight against each wheel.
 
Thanks for all the advice. Now I have to decide whether to bite the bullet and buy a trailer or just rent one. ;)
 
Here's what I plan to do

I hauled mine home on a 5 x 10 flatbed with 12 in sides. Much to tight on the width so I sold that trailer. I'm going get an Aluma 6310 next. Very light weight and very low sides. Check them out on the web. I think a model 638 will work also but I often need more space to haul stuff. Imagine that!!

Do a search on Spyderlovers for 'trailering' and you'll see some great ideas and several pics to help you decide. One more benefit of this great board. Thanks to every one here.
