• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

New Spyder Owner - A Couple Of Questions

Hi,

I am recently a new owner of a 2013 ST Limited. There is a wealth of knowledge on this forum that I've been absorbing, but I have a couple of questions that hopefully can be answered.

Heated Grips - Has any one removed the heated grips? I do not see any wiring going to the grip itself, is the heating element attached to the bars and the grip just slides on/over? I've seen this on other bikes, where the heating element is basically a heat tape that is wrapped around the bars, and the grips just go over it. I would like to get thicker grips, but I'm not looking forward to grinding the shift lever for the Goldwing Clamp-ons. I'm also thinking if there is a way to extend the shaft that the shift lever is attached to.

Updated Side Panels - Does anyone know if BRP will still perform this? Even if not the original owner?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to the forum. You will find a wealth of information here.

I own a 2013 STS SM5. I'm the 2nd owner. BRP replaced the side panels for me before Spyderfest last year - no charge.
My local dealer arranged the upgrade with BRP. This was not the dealer for the original sale.

The heated grips have the wiring routed internal to the covers on the handle bars. You can find the installation instructions
with pictures here on this site and on the BRP website. The OEM heating elements are bonded into the grips.
I made my own heaters with ATV tape wraps. (Frugal).
Try any of our vendors for foam grip covers to get additional thickness and comfort. Heat will pass thru the foam.
One of our members made grips with Paracord wraps. Very nice.
Finless Bob did a Youtube video on installation of Kuryakin grip covers on the Spyder.

Consider a BajaRon sway bar for improved ride and handling. Note the ST is woefully undersprung.
Ron also offers Shock/Sring adjuster. I upgrades with Elka shocks/Springs.

Enjoy the ride. The ST is a great bike.
Cheers, David C.

Welcome ST brother! Remember though to regularly check your oil, and be careful to not overfill. ST's do use oil so keep an eye on it. I have a syringe type of oil injector to add or remove oil. They are the type you buy to mix oil for your 2 stroke engines. It is easy to over do it when adding oil and this tool had just the right length of tube to reach in the oil container and draw out or add small amounts.:ani29:
