• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

New RT but I can't back up

On Tuesday I bit the bullet and traded my GL 1800 in on a Spyder RT. I kicked the tires on a newer Gold Wing Trike but finally decided to take a trip down to the Can Am dealer and look things over. We made a deal on a shiny new Black RT SM and I even helped rip open the shipping box to verify what it was. They assembled it Tuesday and I picked it up. All went well until I tried to back it out of the parking spot and there was no reverse. Hit the button and nothing happened.

So I had to ride home on the back of my wife's RT dismally disappointed.

Today I went back to the dealer who assured me the reverse problem had been corrected. It backed up fine in the service bay. Brought it home, decided to back it into the sun for a photo and once again... no reverse. Those things are hard to push back when you are on a grade.

So, tomorrow it will be back to the dealer again and we'll see what they can find.

I'm sure it will be some minor thing but it is disappointing.

Being so new about the only alternative you have is to return to dealer
I would make sure batt. is charged sufficiently if you have MC charger I would leave it on tonight....And see how it reacts in am.
you might also make sure all fuses and relays are seated properly these are some things you could do at home.

Hopefully you are pressing the "R" button at the same time you are shifting down from 1st gear. Other than that, it could be that when the dealer put it together they missed connecting the wire that hooks the reverse gear.

It is a machine... it can be frustrating, but it can be fixed.
:congrats:&:welcome:

:welcome: and :congrats: on the new purchase. If you don't find its something simple--make sure the dealer tries the reverse several times before sending you down the road. That's is pretty dissapointing if it is a dealer mess up.

Heck of a way to get started--but once the bugs are out, you should be pretty happy with the machine.

Exactly. Being so new to this complicated machine, I wouldn't be surprised if you just made a mistake and didn't hit reverse properly.

How do I know ?.......Well, I'll never admit to this, mind you, but there is a story circulating about a guy (quite a handsome dude) who couldn't get his RT started in Front Royal while his mates waited not so patiently. Went through the whole key, mode switch, starter button routine, and the bike never turned over. Checked the kill switch and it was set properly. Hit the starter switch again...nothing. Hit it one more time and oh wait...........that's not the starter switch that's the CRUISE CONTROL.
Hit the REAL starter switch and the Spyder roared to life.

Again, I'm not admitting to anything, and I won't tell you the number of times I've heard that the same handsome dude THOUGHT it was in reverse, but it was still in first. Have to put it in first, then hit the button and click down one more time. Just hitting the R button doesn't do it. It's ESPECIALLY embarrassing whenthis happens after you so loudly proclaim the superiority of the Spyder over all those Harleys, because you have reverse...............

I'm not admitting anything, just saying these things CAN happen............

:agree: It must be in 1st before hitting the reverse button then one down. Don't even ask how I know this :roflblack: :banghead: :duh:

With the SM, this is the sequence to be used. Put in first, press "R" button, move shifter down to reverse. The "R" button does not have to be held, or pressed simultaneously. I think the SE has a slightly different sequence. If that sequence does not work, you will have to see your dealer again. Some of the reverse actuators have failed intermittently.

Thanks for the responses all.

I'll be off the the dealer in about an hour or so. They work 10 am to 7 pm.

I've driven the wife's RT SE enough to find reverse although my new SM is a bit different. I'm sure there is some connection that is not connecting as I have tried in vain to step down into reverse with no luck.

So, I will push it back out of the garage, stop for a Starbucks (my dealer doesn't offer coffee, unlike some) and wait for them to diagnose the problem. In the meantime I am halfway through Seig Larson's 2nd book so that will give me something to do.

:congrats: on the new :spyder2:hope it all turns out ok,let us know how things go,and good luck, have fun and ride like the wind.:2thumbs::D:chat:

I have been riding scoots of some sort for 64 years. I had the RT a week and meet my buds for our weekly Saturday ride. I am the only Spyder, some had never been close to one, and all thought it was pretty. I got the usual questions.

Time to go. I generally sweep and we have around 12-18 riders. All are mounting their scoots. I put on my jacket, helmet, gloves and jump on BR1.

All raise their hand to indicate they are ready to go. I hit the starter, nothing. I check the kill switch...it is on. I hit the starter again...dead. My Xfriends are hooting me...

I say "phooey"...twice. I look at screen, it does not look right...I say "what the phooey" again....then pushed the mode switch....Hey, it runs!! :D

Can't tell what all you have done, but I suggest that you get the Spyder in reverse at the dealership, in front of the tech.
