New Rear Tire QUestions

It will soon be time to replace the rear tire on my RT and I was wondering if anyone had found an online source for the OEM spec RT tire.
I did a search of the site, but couldn't find anything in my size :D
What kind of mileage are you getting out of your rear tire?
What pressure are you running?
I have only 8500 miles on the stock tire and the center is getting rather worn.
I carry the specified 28 lb. but that must be to high for the type of ryding that I do---mostly 1 up. I will admit that I use about 60% throttle comming off of every light---but I never spin the tire or do hard breaking.
My closest dealer is 70 miles away and I would like to find a source.

Replaced my rear tire at about the same millage. I ride about the same as you describe. Ended up purchasing a tire from my dealer (expensive) but my next one will probably be a Toyo. Had the OEM tire mounted by a local tire dealer and used "Ride-On" rather than worrry about finding someone with a small spindle balancer to balance it. Toyo has the same size in a directional tire. Others on this site have used the Toyo and all seemed to be happy. Much cheaper BYW.

Can anyone quote tire prices and instalattion costs??

Tonga,
I just got a quote from my dealer of $149.99 for the tire and $42.50 shop fee to remove the tire, have it mounted and balanced, and reinstall the wheel on the RT. They don't do the mounting there, but sub it out and it may take a few hours before it is completed depending on how busy the tire mounting dealer is.
I thought I might buy the tire, remove the wheel myself and and have it mounted locally. That means when I re-install it I will have to tension the belt myself. Not sure how to reset it to the proper tension.
I am still deciding on the best course of action.

Rear Tire

Switched my wifes RTS to a 215/60-15 car tire, choices are almost limitless , put a cheap tire to try, O issues, she likes it when this ones wears out will put on a Michelin Hydroedge, we ran these on her previous Wing Trikes and is an excellent tire, have a pair of General Altimax 175/65-14 on the way for fronts to install before our trip to Alaska , only my opinion but the low mileage oem tire is unacceptable for she rides too much for that. Oh yeah, the Hydroedge is rated at 90,000 miles but is also their best rain tire, No I DO NOT work for michelin, I make paper for a living.

installed a falken 912 on mine at 12000 km. removed the rear wheel myself and the tire shop mounted the new tire with no trouble on their tire changer.took it home to static balance it and it wasnt out. have about 5000 km on it now with no problems and showing no wear

I have close to 13,000 miles on my stock tires. I've asked both the tech at my dealership and a good friend of mine that owns a tire shop. Both said I had plenty of tire left and no need for a new one yet. The tire dealer rides all the time.

I've heard good things about the Falken tires (That didn't sound right!:D). Please keep us posted on how it holds up long term...

I installed a Kuhmo Ecsta AST at 8000 miles. I now have about 12,000 miles on the RTS and the tire is showing very little wear. The Kenda was bald in the center when it was replaced even though I ran 25psi in it.
Just my experience.

Just looked up the Hydroedge. Looks like one heck of a tire. The price is not bad if it could get over 25K miles. That just may be my OEM replacement on the RT. Hope to get 15K on the rear tire on the RT. We'll see.

try walmart on line:2thumbs:

Look on Tire Rack and search for 215/60/15. I saw some really nice looking patterns in Dunlap, Bridgestone, etc.

I currently have OEM with 14,650 miles, I have 28 lbs in rear, with air bag btwn 60-80 lbs I too am quick off the line. I think my
longevity is possibly created because of the asphalt make up or less road salt here is more conducive to better road miles, I
really don't know, just guessing.

I also ride with the hitch on all the time, Got the trailer around 6K miles

Might replace these at 18K just before I go to Spyderfest, which is 1800 miles each way.:doorag:

Probably will stick with OEM since everything from VSS, SCS, TCS, ABS, was designed with their equipment.
Gonna find out if my dealer does there own balancing mounting etc. I think they do.

Tires

Yes a 29 yr. wetend operator on a papermachine in southeast texas. Just recieved the General Altimax while at work today, look good, just a little info, on my wifes SM and her friends SE we are running the 215/60-15 rears at 18psi. wear seems to be very little {better compounds} and very even, all tires we found in the OEM sizes were performance{soft} tires, I put on a Douglas walmart in case we had to remove them fopr any sensor issues would not be out much, she has about 3500 mi. now with no problens, very deep treads seems fine in rain too, will do till she gets to the Hydroedge and I suspect judging from her past Trikes 40000mi. + would not be out of the question , just my opinion, good luck.

Hey thanks for all of your post and information. I ordered a new OEM tire on Ebay for $124.99 + $10.00 shipping before I was able to get to the information about the Falken 912 and the Michelin Hydroedge tires. I will plan to change to one of these next time, and hopefully by then there will be more posts of favorable alternative tires.
What is the difference between the 225 and the 215?
Thanks again C-YA RL

Tire

Do not remember specifics off top of my head, 215/60-15 is slightly narrower, and taller , narrower seems to help keep tread flatter at speed for more even wear, being on wider wheel, no more wearing center out , slightly taller is speedo on 68mph = 70mph by radar and gps readings, hope helps, wife says no noticable power difference. Hope is some help we went this route and will stay.

did you have any issues using the 210/60 with vss ... did you have to have it recalibrated or anything?... the hydroedge looks really good... my oem rear is looking bald in the center...

215/60-15 Rear

No issues , this is her second I put on the Hydroedge in preparation for trip to Alaska, this is my choice from now on , but I expect this tire to be on here for a while, sorry slow with response we lost my 94 year old grandmother and been busy.
