He's just ahead of his time...

Only thing I can say is if your dealer says you don't need the ECM update, get them to give you a current BUDS report on your bike and compare the number I have listed above. The bulletin clearly states that if any other number is listed then they have to do the update again. (they also have to make sure that their BUDS system is up to date! This may be the problem? Version 3.5.1 is required)
Had the mapping, fusebox updates done this week on the wife's bike. It only has 2500 miles on it and I just drove it home for her after the work was done, but didn't notice any immediate difference as I don't ride it often enough to tell. Maybe she can tell when she rides it tomorrow for the first time. But I did notice a couple of things I have to call the dealer back about that people may want to watch out for. There is condensation on the inside of the temp gauge that isn't going away. And there is some liquid that ran down the inside of the plastic over the main instrument panel. So I assume the dealer had to take apart the dashboard to get to whatever they did. It's only 2 or 3 runs of something that has dried but I don't like seeing it there. Probably won't make any difference. It looks like there's only 4 or 6 screws and the dashboard cover comes off. So I may try to take it off and see if I can easily clean it up. Can't imagine the temp gauge being exposed when the dash cover comes off, but who knows with these bikes. And I think I posted before that the service manager said the mapping update will not effect, cure or remedy the heat problems, it will only help with a stalling from a dead stop issue, which she never had anyway.
Did you bother reading the bulletin? I posted it above maybe your service manager should read it? The code 1614 never stopped the bike from starting either. I had it pop a few times and it would go away.I was told by my service manager that the update was merely to fix an error. Some bikes after shutdowns and restart would show a high heat message, Even when the bike was not excessively hot. This happened to me twice in relatively cool condition, and the bike had been running at normal engine temps. I got off the bike took the key out walked away, came back and drove off no problem. The campaign was to force the ECM to, in none wrench terms, ignore that code and go on and let the bike start normally. Nothing to fix heat, only clear errors.
From the bulletin:
Problem
B - Update ECM software
Code P1614 may be triggered and cause a limp home mode when starting the engine.
The indicator lamp and message HI TEMP may appear at engine startup, even if unit is at normal operating temperature.
Engine heat felt by the driver may be uncomfortable.
--------------------------------
Solution
B - Update ECM with latest software
Update ECM with latest software to correct the outlined problems.
Note: Updating the software may slightly improve riders comfort from heat in some riding conditions. The portion of the software that addresses uncomfortable heat felt by the drive is applicable to non-CARB vehicles only.
(CARB - California Air Resources Board)
So for some of us at least, the update was, at least partially, to address the heat issue.
Maybe CA does not get the update because of CARB?

Here is my ride update. First remember my mods I have DEI heat tape on tank and extra BRP insulation around the plastic gas cap & under glovebox area.
I took 2 roads one north one south. Wind from south. Going north ambient read 82-84 going south 78-79. Speed was 55-65 and 10 min in town.
Average speed=35mph
Mileage =71mi.
Digital coolant temp on road=4bars
In town =5bars
temp at stop for refill
Gas Cap = 105deg
Spine= 92deg
Glovebox area=92
Metal foot peg area L side=110deg
Metal foot peg area R side=116deg
Plastic above both foot peg areas 92deg
All measurements done with 3 minutes after stopping at gas refill
MPG 71mi /2.25gal =31.5mpg. I have never seen much above 25mpg average before ECM update and a lot higher temp measurements. Should be interesting to see what happens when we get to 90deg.
Guess that shows, you don't know what you think you know Dave:roflblack:
I pick my bike yesterday, with the new mapping I notice the RPM is running higher than before, regarding the heat I need to ride when is over 85 to give you a better feedback, but I will be riding Saturday again, will post my feedback after that, have a great and safe weekend......:yes::yes::yes:
