Before any of you riders invested in your Spyder was there any doubt about buying something that's not been around long to remove any bugs?????

Here's some of my concerns:

It's so new in design and function.
Did you have any doubts quality and durability the first year or so?

What about service?
Wouldn't it take some time to train qualified wrenches nation wide?

Isn't this like buying the 1st redsign cycle while all the bugs are worked out by the buying public.

Your Thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Well Roaddog got his first and we were with him through the whole process of it. He has a Premier Edition.

Got mine a few months later and I have had no major problems with it. Took a little while getting used to it from 2 wheels but I like it alot better. Plus my husband, HDX, is pretty technical when it comes to gear head stuff and he's already done some work to mine - same as what others have done on here to their Spyders.

Also have a very good dealer - he's been selling brp products for a very long time, been in the business for years and he was trained on all the mechanics of the Spyder.

So I wasn't too nervous. And if you don't have a dealer too close - there are usually people here who you can ask questions and get some decent answers from.

It will be soon the third production year of the RS, so most bugs are already addressed. I had some concerns at the beginning too, but my dealer reputation and the existance of this board gave enough confidence to take the plunge.

I am currently looking into buying a Spyder as well and have similar concerns. However, they spent about 10 years on this project before it ever rolled out to the public. During that time I'm sure they worked most of the kinks out. They have also had two years of production models on the road to catch any more kinks (as we recently saw with the recall/update). Plus, as a company, they have a solid history. While they are new to the "on-road" segment, they have been producing ATV's for some time. This is very apparent in their design. The Spyder is essentially a street legal ATV. Something I actually love about it. The company has also produced Skidoo and Seadoo vehicles that have been industry leaders.
I know that there are still people that are having problems. A good deal of them stemming from the Update (especially if you had aftermarket installs). But, I think overall Spyders have a great track record. I believe Lamont has put 40-42,000 miles on his. He is also getting a great feel for the new products coming out.
As I said before, I have some concerns, but I don't have any doubts that I will one day own one. They are fantastic machines.:2thumbs:

I never really thought about it much to be honest. Had a few problems--- got them fixed under warranty--- no charge. I would get the extended warranty---

You won't be disappointed with this bike!

I suppose some of your concerns were mine; However, I bought one and have continued to spent money on accessories and up-grades and I haven't had any problems ( other than small stuff ). The Spyder is a new concept but it uses a lot of old technology that BRP has been using for years, so I didn't concern myself to any great extent. I haven't regretted the purchase and enjoy riding it more than my Goldwing.nojoke

Wouldn't it take some time to train qualified wrenches nation wide? Personally, I think the dealership service business model is its weakest link. Some dealerships are GREAT, most OK, the rest are XXX:cus:XXX . I have to say the same for cars and trucks.

My opinion is that the most "innovative" thing about the Spyder is its looks/design. It is a collection of technology that has been used in many other vehicles. Nothing is a game changer or paradigm shift. The most radical thing (for a motorcycle) is the deep integration of the ECU into engine performance, stability, braking system, and so on.

All together, it feels and handles very differently from anything I have ridden. It may look feel unique, but it is still "standard" technology, no Alien technology from Area 51, it just feels like it.

Bottom line, not a bleeding edge form of transportation and I really enjoy riding it. The Spyder has far exceeded my expectations.

I thought about it...for an instant. It was on my list of pros and cons. Didn't stop us. We took delivery of our PE in March 2008, and have never looked back. You couldn't get this one away from us no matter how hard you tried.

Never a second thought. Best decision and buy we ever made, couldn't be happier (except for maybe a RT) :yes:
I have only had mine for 3 months, and have had no problems. Had my 600 mile service, DPS update, and groundwire done. Runs smoother now then before, didn't even relize it was running kind of rough before.

I am not going to worry about any bugs. "Bugs will be worked out". My biggest enjoyment is ryding my spyder :spyder2:

I joined SpyderLovers before buying too. Many did. It's a great place to ask questions as well has having huge archives that have discussions on just about everything. Ultimately, only you can decide if you want one badly enough.

In the end I even bought used. Too good a deal to pass up. The dealer I got to for service has been great. Long history of BRP products. And I depend on them a lot because I don't do any of my own maintenance.

If you stay here long enough you will discover that most of us love our Spyders with a passion. The ryde is unique. Yet it offers something for a wide range of interests. After ryding one any doubts I had seemed insignificant. So you have to ryde one. Preferably a number of times. The fun factor is huge!

Enjoy learning as much as you can about the Spyder. The many happy Spyder owners here think you won't regret it!

I had all of your concerns when I made the decision to buy one early this spring. You can either worry or you can ride--it comes down to that.
This board is a great place to get educated before you make the decision and it documents the very best and very worst the Spyder can be for people. But it does not represent every owner and is probably more skewed to those who have had problems. I did a lot of reading here before I went to the dealer.
Personally, my 09 SM5 has performed very well in its first riding season and I am happy with the build quality, riding experience, and ability to mod it for better comfort. With 3 wheels, riding takes on a more enjoyable slant since there are fewer worries about rain, gravel, crosswinds, etc. It's not for everyone, but I think I made the right choice. Good luck.

If ya wanna play, ya gotta pay. Since Spyder is the only Y-Trike on the block, you really don't have much of a choice. Considering they spend 10 years and 130 million of their own dollars on developing it, you are getting a great deal no matter which way you look at it. :2thumbs:

I think we all, to a certain extent, had the same thoughts and I completely understand where you are coming from.

Finding this website and reading about all of the tips, tricks and solutions to various problems made me more confident that if something happened, I would not be alone. I know it sounds cheesy to say this, but it did make a difference in my decision.

Now, go get one and ride!!! :2thumbs:

If I took a earlier RS Spyder for a test drive, you feel the RT would be a different feel and ride, or you feel there would be nothing but improvement ??

Who so far ordered a new RT before riding one??\

I saw a picture if it a year before they came out and thought I'd be interested. After the demo ride I put my money down. I never thought about it. Your concern about a competent tech is a good one. Dealers have web sites with comments, both good & bad, about their service. Check those out. As far as the bike, I love it. One of the best things I've ever purchsed. The fun factor is priceless.

I saw one on the road, wanted one, looked at them at my dealer, read this entire forum and bought one, used with 5500 miles, all updates/recalls done and it came with a 3 yr extended warranty. I couldn't be happier (unless i had 2!).
