• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

New Key Problem

I odered a new/extra key from my dealer (who has no idea if the key has a coded chip or not), and received it yesterday. The dealer said to go get the key cut---bring it back to them, and they will try and find out if it needs coding or not. I could not find one Key maker/locksmith who had the fright computer set to grind the key---Sears couldn't---Home Depot couldn't. How do you get a new key prepared?

go to a locksmith, give him your good key plus the blank.
Yes the dealer has to program the key for you...
I think it is kinda DUH, that hey don't have a key machine.. You buy the key from the dealer, and pay them, then you take the key to the locksmith, and pay them, and then you return to the dealer for them to program the key, and you pay them again. grrrrrrrrrr
Yes, I had to have a key made as I lost one.

I had a key go bad, I think they used my vehicle info to send a pre-cut key. They also had to get a tool or adapter to flash the correct data for my spyder onto the key.

I lost my 2nd key weeks after getting the bike. Some home centers won't cut it because of the chip inside and because they dont have the right dies to cut with. My dealer had a mobile key cutter meet me at the store to cut the key, took seconds for a couple bucks, then the dealer coded it. It cost me $90 for purchase, cut, and coding. DO NOT RELY on that plastic sleeve CanAm sends with the keys to put on a key ring. They can (and did) fall out. I wish they had a better system.

My keys had a rubber tag with a number, which I thought the factory used to cut and code a replacement. Am I wrong; if so, what is the purpose of the numbered tag that came with my keys.

:agree:thats what I'm thinking key sleeve works great as long as you feel the click

What is "feel the click" mean?

Insert the key fully into the Holder "thingy" and you will hear/feel a click. Mine has never fallen off...but I am concerned and am very careful about where I put the key while "inserted". The key should have a hole to securely attach to in my opionion.

Agreed...if you click your key into the holster (I guess we can call it that), the key will NOT fall out unless you grip and pull it with a decent amount of force...it's quite secure.

If I'm not mistaken, the service manual mentions no adapter when enabling keys. I'll look again tonight but I believe all you need is the bike and the keys but I may be wrong. I'm guessing that you don't actually program the key but rather allow the bike to accept the new key.

The dealer has to use a "master" to program a new key before it will work.
That is correct. There is a part number in the service manual for the dealer to order this. Also, your new key must be precut for the ignition. Many dealers are not equipped to do this, so you might need a lock shop or hardware store. You will need to reprogram all your keys at once, so bring your old keys plus the newly cut blank to the dealer, and he must reprogram them all, using the service manual procedure in the DESS section, the master key, and the new and old keys. You may program up to four, total.

Thank you all-----

------as usual, you guys know what you're talking about----great information----I'm going to a locksmith today------Then I'm going to share the information you gave me with the service manager at my dealer-----SSSS

I dont think any dealer will ever have anything to cut a key.Our key machine was not cheap and what I use to program the keys was not cheap. It makes it very hard for someone to make thier own.

Even though my dealer was not equipped to cut a key, he sent it out to someone who was saving me the trip. The cost he passed on was minimal.
