• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

New Guy Questions!

Hello everyone,

I am looking intently (already put a deposit so it doesn't go anywhere) at a 2011 RSS that comes with some neat accessories and I had a few questions for those of you who have been riding them (Spyders in general) for a while.

1. This unit has the hindle exhaust and I noticed on the test drive it seems to backfire if it has to downshift quickly, is this normal and can it potentially cause damage?

2. How well does the spyder do in cooler temperatures, it is unlikely that I would see snow but does it start and run without too much fuss in roughly 30 degree weather?

3. I've been looking at the knee pads and I was wondering if anyone who has them would give me their opinion of how they feel and if they are bulky making the ride potentially uncomfortable.

4. Rain, has anyone had issues riding in the rain? I am an all-weather rider (see. not a wimp) which is part of the reasoning behind wanting a spyder, it rains WAY too much here and 2 wheels on top of the beaten roads and miles of tar snakes makes me a bit nervous at times.

Many Thanks!

1. Not normal, have the dealer fix it.
2. She's good in low temperature.
3. Have those, no problem.
4. She's good in rain.

Welcome, I do have the knee pads and most of the time I don't even feel then. For the backfiring, it is normal, you can get a 02 modifier (good luck) or a juice box to help with that. In the mean time buy a K&N filter. Sorry, can't help you with the cold weather question.

Cold weather performance: Have ridden down to 10 degrees above zero. Stored in heated garage--so start up is no problem. Leaving out in 30 degree weather and starting after a few hours sitting--I have had no problems here either.

Riding in rain--try to avoid standing water at speeds more than 55 mph--the :spyder2: will hydroplane and take you for a ride that you will not forget--even with the nanny kicking in.

i got a open muffler and had to put the 02 modifier on it ads just a small amount of xtra gas and it did the job no back firing, the 02 is 120 dollars to 350 for the box ,it starts good in cold weather,i alwas keep mine on a battery tender.i avoid rain but when ive got caught it did ok.now have fun and ride like the wind.:chat:

Tinkering with the exhaust seems to lead to backfiring issues... It's completely fixable; you just need to be able to adjust the mixtures a bit...
Cold weather and rain are tougher on the rider than they are the Spyder; drss appropriately and you'll be able to ride through just about anything that Mother Nature throws at you. Be careful of deeper puddles as hydroplaning can and will happen if you're up on the throttle too far...

I was scared sh&%less to ride my two wheeler in the rain at any speed. First time it rained on me on the Spyder I cruised along at 65 without a care in the world and my only concern when it rains now is how fast can I get my rain gear on,

Teddy & I would like to say Congrats on the New Ryde & Welcome to the SpyderHood

:yes::congrats: & :welcome::yes:

:thumbup:I think you've gotten your questions answered pretty well;)

:thumbup:You've found the :firstplace: site on the www for
ANYthing & EVERYthing Spyder related:clap:

As stated, the backfiring on a quick decel is somewhat normal, and shouldn't cause anything more than a slight annoyance, tho it can be tweaked as suggested.

I believe the general concensus would be that the Spyders actually do better in colder climates than in hot, so no worries there. Teddy & I have personally logged hundred mile trips in the upper teens without issue;)
(besides once going thru a fog bank & our shield freezing solid:shocked:)

We can't speak of the knee pads you mentioned, but others who have them like them without issue.

Teddy and I ryde Year Round (Cincy/Ohio-Northern KY area) and the Spyder handles the rain just fine. Like anything on the road, YES a Spyder can and will (under the right circumstances) hydroplane at higher speeds, but if you feel the rear-wheel starting to fish-tail, just slowly let off the throttle a little and you are usually put right back in track. If not, the Nanny (VSS - Vehicle Stability System) will automatically kick in and do whats needed to keep you going straight

Also, may we suggest reading thru this thread if you haven't already, as it is loaded with good and useful information for any
