• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

New Garmin Map Update

Garmin updates their maps 4 times a year. If you have the lifetime updates (cost about $100) then all updates are free for that garmin unit for life.

Otherwise, at least with the 550, you get your first map update for free. This did not use to have the 1-year limit as I know I just updated a Garmin that was over a year old and it was free. So at least with a 550-- your first map update should be free-- even after a year.

The garmin downloader works pretty good - and can pick up where it left off if your download is interrupted. You want a fast internet connection-- will take a few hours.

Well-- the 550 or 660 motorcycle units cost $600 or more --- but are really durable --so the map updates are worth it. $100 for the lifetime deal is pretty reasonable--- BUT---you cannot transfer that to another Garmin unit if you buy a new one, etc.... :sour:

I have bought 10 Garmin over the years, this is how it goes. When you buy a new unit you will get the latest map update to your unit when you register it no matter how old it is or has been in the store if you buy one that has the letter L after the numbers that mean you will get lifetime map updates as long as you own that unit or you can buy a map update card price range from $70 to $90 and that will work with one unit only. Here is a trick I use every two years or so (does not really safe money) I just want a new one so I get it around the time the new update will be release which is 4 time a year and then I register it and wala new update, this works for me as I do not buy what Garmin calls a biker friendly unit that is water proof which cost upwards of $600 I buy a $150- $200 unit and carry zip-lock bags and ties to cover it so over my years I get 3 to 4 new units while those who paid BIG BUCKS still have the same old ones. I just got a new Nuvi 1490 LT that has a 5" widescreen, to replace the 4.3" I had for less than a year that went flying after my mishap and I got it in March as I knew the first 2011 map update were coming out.
