New F3 vs RT - which seating position is closest to HD?

I must first confess that I sold my 18 F3T for a Harley Freewheeler. I always thought they sounded so good and looked good. Well I spent the money and changed out suspension, added a lift kit and a fairing. It still rides like a log wagon. I have to admit that I miss my F3. So I’m looking at getting back on a Spyder. I did ride 455 miles the other day on my Freewheeler and was super comfortable. I have a sundowner seat on it. So I’m looking at the F3 or RT limited. Which one will put me back in the similar seating position as the Harley? I searched the forum thinking for sure that someone else has asked the question but couldn’t find it via the search tool. So my apologies if this is one of the many.

I have NEVER owned a HD, I got as far as the test sit, and when I fired it up for a test ride, I said heck no.

I have owned GS/RS the early versions of Spyder. Have also owned three RT's (two 998's and one 1330). Now own two F3-L's. I personally like the F3 version better. More streamlined looking, lower to the ground (seemingly, more control). I like sitting "in" my Spyder, instead of sitting "on" it.

Only if I am wearing one of the thousands of Harley shirts I own. LOL

Love the Spyder, but will say the factory seat on the TriGlide is super comfortable. Leaving next week on a 2 week trip, so will know more then.

Do you ever miss your Tri glide?

Ok see I’m glad you mentioned the new RTL. To me it felt really tall and long. I know it’s not that much longer than the F3 but just seemed like it. I guess with the new floorboards you have options.

RT gets my vote

I'm just back from a 13 day, 6100mi trip on my '20 RT Base. I'm 74 and a couch potato EXCEPT when I ride.
We did 400+ miles/day thru heavy rain, low 50s up high to 102 degrees thru the Fly-Overs and far too much straight line riding.
The new RT/RTL is very comfortable in all those conditions.
The floorboards let you shift your feet anywhere from out front to sport-bike (heels against the pass. boards) and the electric screen lets you drop in heat and slow rolling. The wider fairing and raised screen vs F3 creates a dead zone from rain/bugs at speed. My helmet shield never got bug splashed thanks to a very capable swatter, aka, screen. I look over the top of the screen to see ~40ft to road. My riding buddy on 2 wheels had to stop often to clean his face shield.
(Aside: ever ride thru swarms of Midges?)

I’ve been riding through some cicadas so far! I saw a couple new RTLs on the interstate the other day and I thought to myself that they looked like they sat up pretty high. They did look comfortable. On my F3T I did a 450 mile ride and my hips, knees and rump killed me for a couple of days.

Ride both. The new RT is a lot like the F3 in terms of looks and stance. The biggest decider for me was the seat / sitting position: On the F3 I felt sort of locked in place but I could move up and back a little on the RT seat. I like to shift around on my seat a bit when I ride to relieve pressure on my butt. The electric windscreen is also a very nice feature. I typically will ride with it all the way up when I am on the interstate/highway but lower it around town and on slower roads especially in the summer when I want some air movement to cool off.

I wanted to update. I got a 2020 F3 limited. I’m 6’1 but have the floorboards in position 3. I feel like I have more options instead of having my legs stretched out all the time. I already have some upgrades in mind accusing a seat. My boys are smashed up against the tank. Didn’t happen on the test ride, just since they put the rider’s backrest on the bike.
