There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. New DRIFT HD 1080p Camera

Want one but money is a little tight right now so I'll wait till riding season fires back up. :doorag:

Motorcycle Consumer News just did a review of about 5 or 6 cameras specifically designed for motorsports. The two highest rated, as I recall, were the GoPro and the Drift. The newer Drift with higher resolution did marginally better than the old model.

The new Drift HD arrived in Canada a few weeks ago after months of production delays. I had pre ordered mine back in early August and was fortunate enough to be shipped one of the original 10 sent to point of view cameras in Canada.

The first thing you notice is that the new unit is about 3/4 the size of the original HDX170 and you now have a plastic replaceable lens cover up front. Also there are two rear covers allowing you to plug in a usb power cord and microphone jack if you wish to charge the unit while traveling and use a lavalier microphone for commentary while filming. The memory card switched over from an SD card on the X170 to a micro sd card on the new drift.

The clarity of the video recordings in all modes is excellent and I am more than pleased with the quality of the 9 MP photo feature. Only those who have used the HD X170 or something similar like the GoPro Hero would be able to tell you if this newest Drift HD camera compares well.

The only thing that I can tell you right up front is that having a motorcycle mounted video camera without a remote control would not work for me. Taking pictures or starting and stopping video recordings at the push of a button on a remote control is the number one reason I purchased the Drift, and I am very glad I did. The fact that the quality of the 9MP photo feature is so good is just a bonus. I expected great HD video and this unit did not disappoint.

Is it worth the extra hundred bucks over the HD 170 for a more compact unit, higher resolution pictures and a few other cosmetic do dads? Hmmmmmm your call. Only time will tell if my purchase of this unit over the HD X170 will be worth the extra change.

Anyone tried one of these yet?

I just bought mine but I have not used it in anger yet, mainly because www.driftinnovation.com haven't got around to publishing a pdf operator's manual yet. So I'm in the process of visiting camera review sites, picking up bits and pieces of information on how to get smart with my new toy. I have the winter months to play with it before I mount it on the Spyder in the spring and turn myself into a three-wheeled Spielberg! ;)

The reviewers seem to like the new Drift HD, which is encouraging. Its small size, light weight and remote control are universally praised, especially by those who want it mounted on a helmet. It figures. I bought a Panavise mount. There is a lot of smooth shiny plastic on my RT to stick it on. Will I trust the Drift on a suction mount? Yes, but I'll have to tether the mount at first to see how reliable the suction really is. Can't be too careful...

As far as I can tell it operates pretty much the same as the HD170. I wouldn't wait for the pdf to start using it.
nojoke

Thanks, Lamont. I think I've pretty much got a handle on how to set it up. I'll try it out in my car the next time we get some winter sun, we're having some very dull weather here. I've got some bits an pieces on order, including an HDMI to micro HDMI lead which I need to display the recording on my HDTV, then we'll be in business.

I got an HD 170 from Amazon and it came with a spare long life (1700 mAh). It is much thicker than the regular battery.

Am I missing something or is there a trick to putting it in the camera?

Thanks for any help I can get ...

The 170 isn't the camera I've bought but while I was making up my mind up which to get I sorta remember seeing a tutorial video (by Drift?) which explained how to fit the thicker battery into the 170. From memory there is a spacer (adaptor) which holds the thinner battery in place. To make room for the thicker battery this has to be removed. Looked to be a simple matter in the video...

Waddya know, I've found the tutorial! http://vimeo.com/14481578 :)

Got my HD 170 from Amazon. No spare battery included and remote doesn't work due to broken tabs inside. Notified Amazon and Drift about problems waiting to hear from them. :dontknow:

Drift is great butttt

The top three sellers are: GoPro HD, Contour HD, Drift HD. They all have good and bad. The contour HD is a great unit but no screen to view but it is vary compact. The drift gives you best of both worlds. The GoPro is the biggest retailing item with tons & tons of options. They all have great quility. Check out this ProGo ivdeo http://unofficialnetworks.com/wing-suit-flying-7-feet-ground-50809/ it is what we all are trying to capture.
