New DPS gets A+

I never had any trouble with the DPS units on either of my Spyders, but I can tell you “I love my new DPS”. There is a very noticeable improvement in drive-ability. Quick lane changes are easier. On long sweeping curves, it is easier to hold the line. The comfortable speed on a given exit ramp is now higher. I even found it to be easier to make the sharp turn on to the street where I live. I am very pleased.

Congratulations to BRP. I thought BRP would try to skate past the steering issue like they did with the fire issue. I was wrong about this. They faced the steering issue head-on. I am sure they are convinced the safety issue is solved, or they would not have undertaken such a costly remedy. For those of us who already own our Spyders, there was a bonus in the improved drive-ability. This is a good outcome.

The change is very noticeable. If you have the new DPS and do not think there is a change, you should consider the possibility that the work was not performed correctly.

New DPS

After being frustrated with dealer telling me 2 month + for the new DPS I was pleasantly surprised when I spoke to Bryce Page at Berts Mega Mall about an extended warranty purchase. I also asked her about the wait list at Berts. She called service and they said that they have 11 units on the shelf for RS and 3 for the RT. Made an appointment for first thing Monday morning to have mine replaced. Will trailer it in as I am uncomfortable riding it on the freeway with the quirky steering. My friend who has been waiting for his RT replacement has an appointment for Tuesday morning. I guess if you call enough dealers in the area you might get lucky and find some DPS units on the shelf waiting for you.hyea:MMcc

:2thumbs:I agree SYPDER1026! When I had mine replaced it was like night and day. The funny part is I didn't know I had a problem until it was fixed. Those of you that haven't gotten it done are making a BIG mistake. It is a world of difference.:2thumbs:

Please to all spyder owners who have not had there DPS replaced. As I was driving my spyder to get serviced, I tried to switch lanes and couldn't. My spyder kept going straight and I almost got hit by a tractor trailer 18 wheeler in other lane. Luckily I was able to slow down and jerk it to steer. I was very scared. The service department was able to replace for me in a day. I am scheduled to pick up tomorrow so hopefully it will be a much safer ride. So please get your DPS checked out... it could be a matter of life or death.

I don't think of the "old DPS" as having a problem. Aside from the possible safety issue, the old DPS probably did what it was designed to do. The new DPS has different design parameters which go beyond fixing the safety issue. The new DPS seem to provide a little more power assist even at higher speeds where there may not have been any in the past. It would be interesting to know what the facts are on this.

The new DPS seems to target my kind of riding. I am like a Harley or Honda touring rider. I tend to be laid-back and relaxed. I generally don't go more than 10 mph over the speed limit, and I am sure my Spyder never exceeded 90 mph. When I am cruising, I concentrate on experiencing the connectedness of man and machine with the natural world.

A person with a more aggressive riding style may not like the new DPS. If you always like to go as fast as possible, while pushing the outer limits of man and machine, the new DPS may not be as wonderful for you as it is for me.

I feel that I received an unexpected gift.

My Thoughts

I actually got my DPS replaced about a month ago, when i had it in for a oil change at 9k miles. Now with over 10k (yay pic of 10k to come!) I feel I can give my opinion of the new DPS with confidence.

First off, the turning is MUCH smoother, so much so, that I almost wonder if my DPS fuse was loose or something! Took it to work today, and on the freeway, at 70 mph, in the rain, I needed to dodge some, well, what was left of a deer after a semi gets done with it. With the 'old' DPS, because as you can imagine this isn't a maneuver you are expecting to make it was very jerky when I would zig and zag around such an object. This time, it was smooth, but without losing the speed and distance required for the maneuver I was trying to make.

Even when I'm traveling around town, the turning feels much more responsive. Now, was there anything wrong with the old one? I don't think so, all I know is that the new one is, for lack of a better term, an improvement upon the first one.

So I must agree with the last post, definitely an unexpected, and early Christmas gift!

I went by my dealer and passed on my observations as well as many I've seen on this forum. I felt that both "service" AND "sales" needed to know the improvement. I say sales because I'm sure people interested in buying a spyder have heard about the DPS issue. I think that providing the sales people with ammo from us will help in the future sales of spyders. Just my opinion.
