There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. New Alternator on 2014's Review

On my previous Spyders after riding all day i would put the Battery Tender Jr. on the battery and after about 6 hours, the battery would be fully recharged.

With the new alternator, i put it on and within 30 minutes battery is fully recharged

Nice upgrade.

Altanator..!!

little was mentioned about it but is a major change. Having an outside altanator with much bigger output is a real plus...Batteries will be closer to fully charged than any on the stator system.. You also can have more of all those twinkly lights..!! :roflblack:

Thank you for the additional update. That's good to know for those who will find ways to use more electricity.

i am as far from an expert on this subject as you can imagine, BUT, on my previous two new RT's it took several hours to fully recharge, just my observation :dontknow:

Do we also have a newer better battery???

New Spyder owner here. What causes the battery drain? Is it just more power needed to drive some accessories than the pre-2014 alternator could drive?

I'm sure the alternator helps, but on my 2009 and 2012,the only time I ever used a battery tender was over the winter...and I only rode on weekends..

I don't get why you would have to put a tender on after a ride?

The alternator should have it fully charged after a ride unless you have something overloading the system and the alternator can't keep up w it?

Only time I believe you would need the tender would be in the winter when it's colder, if the bike sits for a long period, or your battery is getting old and weaker.

Like all modern vehicles the Spyder uses power for some functions after you turn the key off.

The draw is really minimal and you don't need a battery tender if you ride the vehicle somewhat regularly and don't let it sit over a couple of months.

The amount of current that a battery absorbs from a charging circuit is more a function of the internal resistance of the battery and not the available amps of the charger.

.

Which is what I thought..so why would you need to charge a battery for a few hours after a full day of riding?

I have been in the battery business for the last 26 years.. The battery should not need a charge after a ride. As a matter of fact if you plug the battery in for charging all of the time you are damaging the battery by causing sulfation to occur. Just use the charger when the bike is not in use for long periods of time. A better practice is to take the bike out for a 30 minute ride once every 2 weeks if possible and skip the battery tender all together

I think my post went the wrong way, i was saying i was happy to see an alternator as opposed to whatever we had before.

:agree: Just what I was thinking. The alternator should keep the battery charged if the Spyder (or anything else) is ridden frequently. Here in AL, we have enough decent days, even in winter, to ride once every week or 2. Ride safely, CH

There was a 650 watt magneto under the plastic before.
BRP had to have some pretty important reasons for using it; I'm sure. There's no doubt that the 1200 watt alternator is a major step-up!
(Several years' ago; there was talk of an 800 watt alternator that would bolt right on as a replacement...)

Punny; VERY punny!

I refuse to get into any Battery discussions again, I really feel drained after this one

:roflblack:

Joe it looks like it is time for you to plug into the battery tender for a recharge. :yikes:
