Need your help - anyone every had a broken hinge on a side rear cargo door?

How Cheap?

There is no repairing it just replacement. It is amazing how cheaply the saddlebag is made.

Thanks for your input around this.....do you mean "cheap" design and plastic. What's the $'s amount of the replacement (without labor)????

I think these things will continue to break at the hinge mounts over and over again.....BRP will need to do a redesign. Seems like a "foolish" design to me....my friend with a 9 year old Gold Wing with 150,000 miles on it looked at it and just shook his head - he's had a few mechanical issues with his Gold Wing over the years...but not a hinge mount! How basic is that????

It is a warranty item. I took my spyder in Friday for right side lid. They are going to order the part and when it comes in they will call me. This happened on my 2010 also. Same hinge.

Thanks all for your feedback...seems like I'm not alone on this issue

Thanks all for your feedback...seems like I'm not alone on this issue...looks like all front hinges breaking at the bike "anchor" side. More common that I had thought....glad I posted this and appreciate all of your feedbacks.

Good luck to all of you with those hinge anchor points...I think we'll all see this failure at some point if BRP does not do a redesign!

happened on my new 2012 RTS

I thought I had closed my side lid securely. Well, The lid opened at 60-70... luckily I noticed it in the right rear view mirror. I stopped and closed the lid. Later on I opened the lid to put something in and noted the broken hinge!

Turns out to fix it, you have to replace the entire inside case assembly. It s a big plastic part, but surprisingly for its size it is not that expensive ($63). It is not too difficult to replace. Save the parts and try to reweld it with a plastic welder...

Update....still waiting

Hi Jim,
Any updates on your warranty claim? Inquiring minds what to know :chat:

Les

Hi Les, thanks for asking (my blood pressure may rise as I respond to your question -- due to the "slowness" of response from my dealer)

Called dealer 9am Monday and sent email with pictures. 2 days ago and no info. back from dealer....so (you know me) I sent another email this morning asking if they got the first email with pics(next I was going to call). She said they did get my email on Monday. The only other thing she stated is the part is ordered. Then I sent another email asking estimated time when part will arrive...she responded they don't have a tracking number!

Now 3 days have gone by and the only response I got is that they got the part ordered and no estimated time of arrival - you got to be kidding me........

How's your dealer with communications? Seems like it's a black hole and if you don't take the initiative, nothing happens......ugh.

It really would have been nice if the Service Advisor would have acknowledge the email the first day, state they would order the part, tell me if it's covered under warranty, and give me an estimated date for the repair -- maybe I'm asking too much!

What ever happened to excellent customer service????

BTW: I just dread riding my Spyder with filament tape holding on the saddle bag cover to insure it doesn't fall off -- what a way to represent BRP products - huh?????

Jim,

Sorry to hear this. It does seem that dealer communication is hit or miss. When my rear caliper needed replacement Les from Caswell's told me the part would take 1 to 2 days to get depending on which warehouse it came from. They had me back on the road in 3 days.

I know that no information is very frustrating. No tracking number tells me that it has not shipped yet, or your dealer is not asking for it.

Me I would be calling the parts manager and asking for an answer.

Good luck with this!

Les

Broken door hinge

Hi all, had a great ride today! Stopped at a garden to watch the hummingbirds, butterflies, etc. (yes the wives were along...LOL). Also, starting to see some fall colors even though we were in southern MN.

This happened on our "new" 2014 RT Limited!

I opened my left rear cargo door, pulled out our soft sided bag with 2 diet cokes and 2 waters inside and set it on the rear cargo door lid when it was opened...I saw it move! WOW, it looks like my front hinge is broke. I had done this on my 2012 RT and my 2014 RT numerous times. Never any major weight placed there. We were just amazed at how fragle this is....I know it states no more than 15 pounds for carrying weight and this probably was a max of 5 lbs. It was not tossed on the opened door lid, just gently placed....ugh.

I would appreciate any input if you had this happen to you and ask about the warranty of something like this. Seems like a flaw to me that something would break so easily???

Our friends we were riding with have a 2005 Gold Wing....he just gave me static about my Spyder RT when that happened! He could not believe that would happen!

Thanks, in advance, for any feedback! I wanted to get input from this forum prior to my call to the dealer on Monday!

Here's some picture. The hinge broke on the body part of the left rear cargo bag area.

Yes it happened to me. Well is was actually the dealer who broke it. It cannot be super glued back together. The dealer ordered a new piece and replaced it. Took all of 10 minutes to change.

Thanks...might be a different part broken

Thanks for your info.! However, it will take much more than 10 minutes to replace as SpyderAnne had the same issue as me and it took hours to remove all the Tupperware and replace the cargo side "bucket" that attaches to the bike. That is the part that broke on mine also and will require a lot of work to replace. The hinge broke on the bike side, not the cover side. Your's may have broke on the cover side which would be a much easier replacement!

Hopefully, I can get my dealer to fix it within the next week....it's been S L O W going so far!
