Need your help - anyone ever had a broken hinge on a side rear cargo door?

Hi all, had a great ride today! Stopped at a garden to watch the hummingbirds, butterflies, etc. (yes the wives were along...LOL). Also, starting to see some fall colors even though we were in southern MN.

This happened on our "new" 2014 RT Limited!

I opened my left rear cargo door, pulled out our soft sided bag with 2 diet cokes and 2 waters inside and set it on the rear cargo door lid when it was opened...I saw it move! WOW, it looks like my front hinge is broke. I had done this on my 2012 RT and my 2014 RT numerous times. Never any major weight placed there. We were just amazed at how fragle this is....I know it states no more than 15 pounds for carrying weight and this probably was a max of 5 lbs. It was not tossed on the opened door lid, just gently placed....ugh.

I would appreciate any input if you had this happen to you and ask about the warranty of something like this. Seems like a flaw to me that something would break so easily???

Our friends we were riding with have a 2005 Gold Wing....he just gave me static about my Spyder RT when that happened! He could not believe that would happen!

Thanks, in advance, for any feedback! I wanted to get input from this forum prior to my call to the dealer on Monday!

Here's some picture. The hinge broke on the body part of the left rear cargo bag area.

Bummer...

Looks more like the plastic the hinge mounts to failed. I would certainly deem that warranty.

I agree!! Looks like plastic failure. Sorry to here (and see) that happen. Are you sure you were'nt toting them larger 2 liter jugs????:roflblack::roflblack:

Nope, just the 12 oz diet cokes and a couple of 16 ounce waters.... "I need a drink" after that! LOL :opps:

Why in the world would the "anchor" of the hinges be plastic that won't hold up or fatique out????:banghead:

Anyways...hope to see you on another MN Spyderlovers ride!:D

Best be certain nothing was caught between the door and the sealing surface. Probably a lot of leverage and strain when the door is closed.

No such problems here. I would push for having it fixed under warranty. They might have to end up replacing the whole saddle bag.

Thanks....

That's a good point! :2thumbs: I really don't think we had anything in the closing areas....but I understand how that could add pressure to the hinge. The hinge failed when I set the soft sided bag with the drinks on it....maybe was just the last straw....could have been cracked from before???

Hoping it will be covered by warranty as I don't think we "abused" it in any way!

Interesting..!!

haven't seen this happen. Hope you get it fixed up and if is faulty plastic they warranty it...

FWIW, the carry straps, I removed them from our BRP soft bags. To easy to have one get caught. Remove and put in the bag itself or trunk or I just leave them home...

We don't use the straps eithe...they stay at home

Nothing loose to dangle in there. No straps on the bag to tuck in. We do have netting on the side where I have windshield spray/cloth. I don't think there is much "pressure" on the hinges on that side as the bag fits "loose" in there and not much pressure to close. I may have to think of a way to reinforce the backside (on the bike side) of the supports for the hinges.

The 2014 RT has been an awesome machine....love it with just over 10,000 miles on it. Never thought that I would have this problem.

Jim,I think that something like that would be covered without question. There would have to be clear evidence of abuse or collision damage to deny that..IF they do,go to a body shop and have them glue the broken piece on with that two part body epoxy..It is applied with a "caulk" gun with two nozzles..When the trigger is squeezed,it mixes the two parts together...It holds body panels,so I know it will repair that stronger then new..I have fixed a cracked steering wheel,my trailer latch mounting on the trailer I took to Minnesota and my fiberglass flip up headlight housings on my antique car..

Thanks!

Hi Bob, thanks for the insight on the repair if needed ....hope the dealership/BRP covers it under warranty - that's my first choice!

Hope you're having a great riding year -- we've put on over 10,000 miles on our 2014 RT and enjoying every mile...even with a broken hinge - LOL. That just happened today! :yikes:

Say "hi" to Denise and IF we ever get your way, we'll give you a call...won't be this year...but you never know as we really enjoy riding..might have to do a trip like you guys did! :D

AKA. Ann Meyer just started a thread that her hinge also broke on her '14. Being The mechanical whiz that she is.....she said it was a long :banghead::banghead:project.

Another possible solution would be to put a plastic plate behind for additional strength or for an epoxy PC-7 will do it. It is very strong and easy to use, plus has many applications, for other projects.

:agree: Try sending her a PM... I'm sure that she can give you advice about how to replace it!

I had it happen to me on the left side. As I was riding the open cargo light came on. I stopped to check it and just as I was dismounting, the door dropped open and my right foot snagged it and broke the hinge. I took it in and it was replaced under warranty.

To repair it the dealer will have to replace the inner saddle bag... I know. It took a 15 lb variac falling 3' to break one of mine. IIRC the part cost me about $50 to fix mine.

I would first try to get the warranty repair.
If that is unsuccessful and you need to repair it yourself, PC-7 is an excellent suggestion. I can also recommend Plastic Weld. In either case I'd add one further improvement.
Get some fiberglass tape, the kind they use for taping joints in wallboard. Use that as a substrate. Build up several layers of tape and glue until you have about a 1/4" layer of material behind the broken parts. That should be plenty strong enough.

Thanks Bob...SpyderAnne already replied to my PM.....we both agree - very poor design. Mine broke on the side I use all the time. The other side we don't open much as it has our rainsuits. I am concerned over time, the plastic will fatique out and we all may be seeing failures in the hinge mounts (bike side)....ugh.
