• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Need advice on a 2014 or a 2015 Spyder?

Facts:

I can get a new 2014 RS-S, Manual, V-twin at a local dealer for $13,750 out the door.

I can get a new 2015 F3 Manual, 3 cylinder at a different local dealer for $18,500 out the door.

Is the $4,750 difference worth it?

I assume that most or all of the earlier problems have been sorted out on the V-twin models by 2014-OUI?

Simple answer for me

It sounds as though affordability is not and issue, just whether or not to spend the money. The 1330 is a far better engine. The F3 handling is superb. Go with the F3
 
The 4 inches difference in ride height and thus center of gravity is HUGE in terms of handling. If you can afford it, go with the F3.
 
Very interesting Bob. I think I'd have to sit on both to make a decision. I know the 2015 F3's have adjustibility options for the footpegs and handlebars and the one I sat on was fairly comfortable.

Mainly, I'm concerned about the frequency and cost of maintenance issues between the 3 cyl and the 2 cyl. I know the 3's have hydraulic valves which to me is a huge plus!

By 2014 had the problems been ironed out? Like stalling, limping, not starting, bad security systems, running hot and catching on fire??

By the way, Your opinions were recommended to me by Larry, Hogcowboy on the motorcycle site I frequent. He and his wife live in Texas and both are members here but the wife rides the Spyder.

If money is not an issue--the F3 with the 1330 engine would be my choice--hands down.

Cost of maintenance is much less on the 1330. Initial oil change at 3,000, then at 9,500 or so miles later (12,500 for the second one), then 9,500 miles or once a year whichever comes first. No valve adjustments required.

The year with the most issues was 2013. There were a lot of heat issues, and about 10 fires on the RT model. BRP was supposed to introduce the 1330 that year. It did not work out. They put the 998 engine in on a 1330 platform--causing excessive heat on some. The heat issues were fixed with special scoops.

Overall, the 998 is a pretty iron clad engine. I have over 100,000 miles on 4 assorted, and never experienced any of the above. My 2014 1330 now has 21,000 miles on it and I have not had any mechanical issues with it either. Either, or would be good--it is still kind of your choice.
 
Test ride both of them. If money is no problem buy the 1330 triple. If you don't buy the 1330 stay away from your psychiatrist as he might have you committed.
 
Chalk and cheese....

My last was an RS-S and now I have an F3-S.
The RS-S was a 5 speed auto and revs had to be kept up to at least 3800rpm
to protect the centrifugal clutch. I did around 7500 miles on it and enjoyed the time I had it.
Now I have had the F3-S since Easter and have already clocked almost 6000 miles.
It is so much better to ride than the RS-S in almost every aspect that it really is "chalk & cheese"!
With the 6 speed auto I can cruise at 45 mph at a bit over 2000 rpm and then crack the throttle wide open
and away we go!! I had the BajaRon sway bar on the RS-S but the F3-S handles like a dream
right out of the crate. I think the only increased expenditure will be on rear tires!!
Driven gently I can get very close to 50 mpg (Imperial Gallons) and I can ryde it all day without fatigue.
I bought it before anyone had even sat on one and Lamont said it was the best Spyder yet and that was
good enough for me. He was right.

The big difference is knowing how to ryde the V-twins as opposed to the new ace triple. The F3 is easier to ryde for those coming off touring bikes. I love the high rpm manual twin and would go for the RS and save a bundle to travel about...:thumbup:

Knowing how to ride the V-twin is a good point but the cheaper maintenance on the F3 trumps that. Although if you only ride a few thousand miles a year I guess it doesn't really matter but for me I have saved thousands of $$ on maintenance with the 1330.

But check out the ergonomics on both and see which you prefer. But IMHO, I'd go for the F3 with the 1330.
 
As much as I love the 1330; you buy a bike for how it makes you FEEL... not for the lowest operating costs. :thumbup:
